Backup/replica failing after update vmtools on vSphere 5.1.0-947939

Thread needs solution

Dear all,
after we upgraded vmtools on windows servers to 9.0.0.15210 all replica and backup jobs starts failing.

Backup of old windows servers or VMs without vmtools runs perfectly.

Did you ever experience this issue?
Thanks
Rick

Hello Rick,
we updated yesterday the first hosts to 5.1.0 1021289 and some machines to VMX-09 with Tools Version 9.0.1 build-913578.
I am Sorry to tell, but we didnt had any issues regarding the backup of any new VMX-09 VMs and new tools so far.

Cheers

Peter

Hi Riccardo,

The error is a general quiesced snapshot failure one: "An error occurred while quiescing the virtual machine. See the virtual machine's event log for details." . It is thrown by VMware when either VMware tools cannot process quiescing properly or there are VSS problems inside the guest OS of the VM. The typical workaround is to re-install VMware tools in interactive mode (uninstall, then reboot the VM, then install again, and final reboot) to ensure that all VSS components are installed. You can check more details at http://kb.acronis.com/content/4559

Thank you.

I've upgraded ESXi to build 1021289 and then upgrade all vmtools. Problems gone and now i can backup/replicate.

Best Regards,
Riccardo

P.S. thank you Peter ;-)

Could it be that sometimes you need to create one snapshot manually once for the VM (you can delete it then), and then afterwards the backup works fine?
