Exchange 2010 Multi Tenant (With /hosting flag)

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have some Exchange 2010 server in a cluster, DAG and CAS Array, and I installed them with the /hosting flag AKA Multi Tenant. I'm wondering if this is supported by vmProtect 7 or if it just supports a standard Exchange install?

And what servers should I put as Exchange aware? I have AD-server, CAS-server (Client Access) and Mailbox-server. Do I just need it for the mailbox server or do I need it on all of them? Technically the AD server doesn't have Exchange installed but it handles the Exchange information..

What happens if I would put the AD as Exchange aware? Would it screw up the system or something?

Hi Patric,

In general it does not matter which node of Exchange 2010 DAG cluster you are backing up, since in this case each node can host active databases and passive databases (i.e. replicas of databases from other nodes), and all these databases will be properly backed up as they are accessible from any node. Note that the logs will be truncated for both active and passive databases in this case.

In case of vmProtect we need only Exchange databases (.edb) to be backed up, i.e. only hosts with Mailbox role. AD calls is only used to retrieve the local path to these databases within the Exchange server.

The implementation of Exchange support is different in vmProtect than in ABR so the forum thread linked by MG may not be applicable here, but I will clarify it with our developers and will let you know the final outcome.

Thank you.

Hi,

In addition to my previous post: the implementation of mailboxes metadata collection is indeed different in vmProtect and ABR (Acronis Recovery for Exchange), so while ABR indeed does not support multitenant environments (it has problems with this metadata collection), with vmProtect in theory it should work since we use different mechanizms for the same data collection.

Patric,

We haven't tested vmProtect with such Exchange configurations and if you can try backup of Exchange VM (with mailbox role) with Exchange-aware option enabled and let us know the results it would be really appreciated. Please post your results in this thread if you are ready to give it a try.

Edit: just noticed the original post date - looks like it had been overlooked in the past :( Still I hope the info will be useful for community.

Thank you.
