Failed to restore

Thread needs solution

I'm unable to restore a VM which was backed up as part of a trial. I get the following error in the log.
I don't know what parameters might be incorrectly set, or even how to find out.

Group restore error: failed to restore the virtual machine '##_Date####(Increment)##'.

Further investigation, but not solution yet.

Restoring single files works, so it's isolated to restoring back to a ESXi server.

The error appears to be
Opening virtual disk '[vms2] Win2008R2 Template/Win2008R2 Template.vmdk' via network due to server license restrictions.

Does this product not support restoring to a licensed 4.0 ESXi server (VSphere 4 Essentials License)?

It should restore to a full version of 4.0.4.1 and 5.0 ESX and ESXi. Do you have Admin permissions to the machine you are restoring to?

There is a known problem where Restoration of a VM which was under vApp and under a Resource Pool (vApp->Resource Pool->VM) to new location fails (from th elist of known problems.

This morning I tried creating a new user called 'acronisbackup' on the ESXi host. When I went to change the credentials in vmProtect 'Test Connection' worked fine, but 'Save' caused an errror ("A Virtual Servers Controller error has occurred."). What this really means is that the user doesn't have administrator permissions, so I added those for that user. Backup and restore for that user now is working, does the user really need all permissions?

Is there a list somewhere of what permissions the user needs for vmProtect to work?

Please improve the error messages in vmProtect.

James,

If you need users who don't have Admin credentials to make and recover images, you could try adding them to the Backup Operators group.

Hi Colin,
No such group exists in ESXi, it seems that groups and permissions are quite simple in ESXi, a group can either Administrate, Read-only, No Access on a selection of objects. This in turn means that vmProtect needs to have Administrator on the ESXi host in order to do it's work. Maybe things have improved in VMWare ESXi 5.0?

James,

I take it the image was made using the same build of vmProtect, just one is the trial version and the other the full?

If you are using the trial version then one of the restrictions is no physical to virtual restore.

It is the trail... still waiting for accounts to buy the license...3 days to go.
All my backups are of virtual machines so far.

I think you might need to talk to support about this problem just to check that it isn't a trial restriction you've run into.

I just read this post because I have a Trial vmProtect running on my Server which is backing up 2 Host Servers running ESXi 5.0. Trial restrictions indicate I have no P2V restore. But does that mean I can't restore any of the VMs I am backing up? I get the above error no matter how or where I restore the VM backup. Seams funny that you would be restricted from testing the restore portion of vmProtect

There should be an explanation to that then. I just couldn't figure out which one it is.
