Installation on multiple servers necessary?

Thread needs solution

I was running vmProtect 8 on one ESXi server with 9 vms. The backups are saved on a Windows Storage Server via LAN. Now I added a second ESXi server and moved some of the vms. Also added replication.

Backup still works but in log I found that my second server is missing an ESX-Agent. Is it necessary to install vmPortect on the second server if my backup destination is on a network share?

Regards
Martin

Hi Martin,

The migration of the VMs onto another host means that the virtual appliance of vmProtect has lost direct connection to these VMs disks (from what I can see you migrated them to non-shared datastore) and that's what the message is about. Typically if you back up VMs from the same ESXi host where vmProtect is running their virtual disks are attached to the virtual appliance and thus backup is performed in LAN-free mode. In your case the situation is different since virtual appliance no longer can perform backups in LAN-free mode and thus the disks are accessed over network (which is typlically slower). Backup still works of course, but it can be running faster.

I would recommended to deploy another virtual appliance onto your new ESXi host and back up only the VMs from this host by this new appliance (to ensure LAN-free backup). Remember that you will need to manage this new appliance separately (i.e. connect to it from your Internet browser, create tasks, etc.) and on the old appliance it would be better to exclude (remove) the migrated VMs from the backup task by editing it.

Hope this helps!

Thank you.
