vmProtect 7 Unable to backup replicated VM
I’m not sure if this is a bug or it is by design but it’s an issue for us none the less.
It seems that if you have a replicated VM, that is it is the destination or “fail-over” of a replication set, you are unable to select it for backup in the vmProtect backup selection screen.
OK, just switch back to the source ESX server I hear you say, but what if the source ESX server is no longer around (dead)?
How do you safely remove the replication attributes from the VM so it can be selected for a backup?
This can easily be reproduced.
1. Create a VM on an ESX host (E.g. SBS2003 on ESX host #1)
2. Use vmProtect to replicate the VM to another ESX host (host #2)
3. ESX host #1 dies
4. Set Failover (to ESX host #2)
You can no longer select the VM for backups in vmProtect.
• vmProtect (7.0.5144) is installed as a Virtual Appliance on an ESX host (ESX5).
• vmProtect otherwise works fine and it can still communicate with the ESX host (host #2) fine.
• After deploying, the ESX host is seen in vmProtect Management Console and any non-replicated VMs are able to be selected for backups, including any newly created VMs on the ESX host.
• The course ESX host (host #1) is gone and is not recoverable.
I have already tried deleting the appliance but vmProtect refuses to allow backup of VMs with the replication attributes.
How do you backup this VM?
