Restoring files Takes Ages

Thread needs solution

Hi,

We are using Acronis Cyber Backup 12.5 for our daily backup. We have a physical server with 2 hard disk partitions. We do a weekly full server backup. Now I need to restore the server on a VM for some tests. The VM has different specs than the original server. For drive C: (and MBR) I did a full vloume restore, which worked fine, and I can boot the VM normally. For drive D:, the original servers hard disk total capacity is larger than the destination VM hard disk size. So I had to select a subset of the files in the backup to restore them. The total size of selected files is about 1.6 TB (Destination hard disk is 1.8TB). The restore process has been going on for more than 48 hours, and it reached %67 so far. Just for comparison, restoring hard disk C: which is 0.6 TB took around 8 hours only.
When I check the current job details, no errors are shown. Its working but deadly slow !!

Note: I am booting the VM from Acronis bootable recovery CD, and run it directly from there.

What can be the reason for this??

Thanks in advance

Hello Shaban,

thank you for your posting! Usually, the file-level operations with the large amount of data take more time compared to the disk\volume-level operations. However, to localize the issue I'd recommend the below tests:

  • Where possible, try to run the same operation to local instead of network storage and note the performance difference, if any.
  • Copy a sufficiently large file (as close as possible to the archive size) between the source and target and note the exact size and duration of the procedure

In general, performance improvements are constantly being worked on and released, so updating to the latest build is always recommend for the best performance of backup and other operations.

If performance outside Acronis is notable better, please open a support ticket for investigation, so that our engineers can look into the situation (this might require updating to the latest product version).
