Mac to Windows files recovery

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I'm currently looking into changing my backup software.
My main need is to be able to restore files from MacOS (Ventura) to Windows.

I have installed Acronis Home for my POC on the 2 machines.

- The backup works fine
- Mac to Mac restoration is OK.

However the Mac to Windows restore not works

I can see the files in the Acronis restore explorer , but when I run the restore I get an error message :

And in the logs I have this:

I contacted sales support because I don't have access to technical support on trial.
The agent told me that it should work...

Have some people already tested this use case and are there any limitations?

Thanks :)

CCR, welcome to these public User Forums.

Please see KB 1689: Backup archive compatibility across different product versions which shows information relevant to your question.

See also KB 69328: Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office on Mac: FAQ which has the following statement towards the bottom of the FAQ list.

Are the produced backups compatible with Windows version of Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office?

Cloud backups and locally stored disk backups can be opened and recovered by both Windows and Mac version, no matter which operating system they were created on: e.g. you can use Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office on Mac to recover files from a Windows disk backup.

File/folder backups stored locally (not in Acronis Cloud) can only be used by Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office on the same platform they were created on.

If you need to access your files from Windows, that are stored in a backup in Acronis Cloud, use the Web Restore page.

The above would apply to earlier versions of Acronis True Image for Mac & Windows.

Hello Steve,

Thank you for your quick and pertinent reply.

There's something I don't understand.
The 2 articles are confused.
- KB 1689 indicates that cross restore is not necessarily possible (Not indicated)
- And KB 9328 says

Cloud backups and locally stored disk backups can be opened and recovered by both Windows and Mac version

I don't use cloud backup, I use local backup...

I understand that this should work, what do you think?

Thanks

hello Steve,

Thank you for your pertinent answer to my problem.
I have read your documentation and there is something I do not understand because it says the opposite

  • KB 1689: ACPHO windows can restore just windows backup
  • KB 69328: Cloud backups and locally stored disk backups can be opened and recovered by both Windows and Mac version

As I understand it, if we take 69328 which is the latest, it should work. What do you think?
Is this a problem or a bug?

Thanks

Unfortunately I am a Windows user with no access to a Mac system to be able to test the information given in the Acronis KB documents.

My understanding of KB 69328 is that it is suggesting that you could open a local Full Disk backup image that is using the new .TIBX archive file format using either the Windows or Mac version of ACPHO.  This then further suggests that this would not apply to Files & Folders backup images that use the older .TIB archive file format.

p.s. sorry for the 4 day delay since you last posted, looks like the Acronis forums didn't push any new posts out until this morning!!

Sorry for the double post, it wasn't validated by the forum...

I've tried a few things in the last few days and even made a full backup to an external drive.
But it's impossible to restore from Windows. Sames errors in logs.
I also tested with different OS versions and machines (Monterey, Ventura etc)

I don't think it works despite the support in KB.
I can't risk buying a subscription for my 5 machines without validating this POC...

Thank you for your help, I will look for other products :(
