How to properly install crucial SSD into HP laptop using cloning software
Hello all,
I recently bought an SSD from crucial and it came with the acronis cloning software. I just have some general questions about how to install this properly so I don't mess anything up.
First thing I do is backup my files and image disk for windows 10 and then I clone the my HDD that's in my laptop to the SSD outside the laptop? Or do I install the SSD first and then do the cloning? And if I have to install the SSD first do I need to do anything to the SSD then? Like update firmware or intialize it and how do I get my computer to boot the SSD if there is nothing on it? Is there anything else I should be wary of? Lastly is it a good idea to clone or is there a better alternative like doing a fresh install of windows and then just doing a restore from my backups to the new drive? Thank you

Would I need to update the firmware before I install or intialize the SSD? I saw that on a forum a restore doesn't work if you are putting in a new drive, so how would that work? Thank you.

Ernesto,
What forum is it you refer to that claims a restore does not work when putting in a new drive?
Also, when you ask about firmware update are you referring to the SSD firmware? Is this Crucial drive you have new-out-of-box or previously used?

How do you link a hyperlink? I tried using the link tool on here but it's not working
And yes SSD firmware, new out of the box

If you need to update firmware on the drive it is best you do that first as that procedure can cause data loss in some circumstances.
As far as cloning, we recommend that you instead first create a Recovery Media boot medium. USB Flash drive or CD/DVD can be used for this purpose. After you install the Acronis product on your computer you can then create this medium.
Once created make sure you can boot to the medium. Once booted to the medium you should create a backup of your entire OS system disk (all partitions). Once that is created then you should follow the Help guide instructions on performing a backup image recovery to the new disk.
If you prefer to clone than you may find the link below to be helpful
A misstep that is common is when using boot media the correct boot mode must be selected to insure a disk can boot correctly after the process. This applies to both clone and image restore.

I can't link that forum for some reason but I took a snip of it and pasted it as a JPG

Ernesto,
You are confusing Windows System Restore Point with that of Acronis True Image backup restore. These are not the same process at all. True Image is designed to do this task of making an image of an existing disk and then restoring that image to a new disk. This is the whole idea behind a Full Disk Backup Image.

Ah ok, how would I go about doing that and is it safer to do that than to clone?

Ernesto,
You need to familiarize yourself with the information in the document links below. Again, we encourage performing an Image backup and then Restoring that image to a new disk instead of cloning. If you decide to Clone then you are strongly encouraged to create an Image backup first so that you will have a safety net to fall back on if the clone operation fails for whatever reason.
