Disk Director 2011 snapman.sys BSOD

Thread needs solution

Problem started after installing trial version of Acronis Migarte Easy 7.0 on top of Acronis Disk Director 2011 on Windows 7 x64. After discovering that I cannot image my 500GB drive to a 750GB drive and select manual partitioning (instead of proportional partitioning) using Disk Director, I went ahead and downloaded the trial version of Migrate Easy. Upgrade went well and everything was operational for about half a day. However, later in the day my system Blue Screened. I restarted the system and tried to download the Windows Debugging tools and I got BSOD again. There is no new drive or USB flash drive etc. installed on the system when the crash happened. It seemed completely random.

After total of 4 BSODs, full HDD check, full Memory check etc. later I managed to install the debugging tools and found out that all 4 crashes caused by the snapman.sys. 3 out of 4 crashes indicated “KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED” and the other one was “ATTEMPTED_SWITCH_FROM_DPC”.

Needless to say, uninstallation of both Acronis products solved my problems. I just wanted to share my experience with rest of the Acronis community, so at least others would know what to do if they see the same problem.

That being said, this incident lowered my confidence on Acronis products significantly.

Hello Veneficus,

Thank you for posting in our forum. I am happy to assist you.

The problem occurs, because of installation of Acronis Migrate Easy 7 on your Windows 7 x64 system. This operating system is not supported by this product. You can find this information on the product homepage or in this article of our knowledge base. Please be aware, before installing any product on your system to check the system requirements first.

For using with Microsoft Windows 7 operating system, I recommend to use True Image 2013 by Acronis which contains also the disk cloning feature. I could see, that you have this product already. There you also can use the clone feature, or backing up and recovering the system.

If there is anything else I can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hi Peter,

I am sorry but the explanation doesn't solve my problem. A problem that could be avoided IF your installation program properly stopped the installation of an incompatible product on an incompatible OS. I have written more than 500 installation packages in my time and I've never made a mistake like this. If an application does not compatible with the operating system it is executed on, installation should warn the user and stop the installation. This is a standard industry operation procedure.

As a result of Acronis's negligence, I now have not one but two unbootable disks. Both stop with boot error 0xc000000e. The reason they ended up this way is because i got repeated BSODs while I tried to uninstall the Migrate Easy product.

Since the extend of this incompatibility was known by Acronis that led Acronis to write a knowledge base article, it is even more important to make sure that no one executes this installation on an incompatible operating system. Acronis's lack of due diligence in this matter is now costing me time and money.

I admit that my demise comes from placing my trust on a company that is not diligent in their operations. This is a massive flaw for a company that produces products that handles customer's precious data.

Hello Veneficus,

Thank you for your reply.

I apologize for your problems with Acronis products. I can completely understand you and have forwarded your feedback in our Customer Listening System. You can be sure, that this feedback is heard.

You should use the advanced startup options of your Windows start CD to fix the boot issue. Once the system boots up, you should run this Microsoft FixIt in order to remove all unused parts of the Acronis Migrate Easy installation.

If there is anything else I can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.
