Using the OS Selector option with PGP Whole Disk Encryption (WDE)

Thread needs solution

I'm thinking about purchasing Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 so that I can use the OS Selector option on a PC that has PGP Whole Disk Encryption (WDE) installed (v 10.0.1). Does anyone know if this will work? Here's my setup and what I'd like to be able to do:

I have a PC running Windows 7 Ultimate with PGP WDE installed. When I boot the PC, the PGP screen appears first prompting me to enter the PGP passphrase, after which Windows boots in the usual way.

I want to add an additional hard disk drive to the PC. On the second drive, I want to install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, without PGP or any type of encryption.

Will the OS Selector option in Acronis work with this setup? Will it provide a choice when the PC is turned on of which hard disk to boot to, even with PGP WDE installed on one of them?

Thanks for any feedback, I'm completely new to Acronis software.

John,

I have never tested OSS on encrypted drives so I don't have a direct answer for that. OSS will take over the MBR. If the PGP code is in the MBR, OSS may make a copy and use it. In addition, the OSS files would need to be available at boot-up. This means they would need to be on an unencrypted partition.

Please be aware that DD 10 (and OSS) don't currently support Windows 7. DD 11 will have Windows 7 support (it's currently in beta testing).

If your computer has a BIOS Boot Menu on startup (F8, F11, etc.), it may be easier to use that instead of a boot manager. You could set the "main" OS as the default and just select the other drive as needed. Of course, if you need to boot between them frequently, a boot manger may be nicer.

Hello John,

Please, enable OSS or the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager before you encrypt the hard drive. After the Acronis OS loader is installed (and tested it), encrypt the hard drive.

Doing this, you will first see the encryption authentication. Upon a successful authentication, the Acronis loader will be launch, which will present you the usual menu (F11, etc).

Let us know if you have any other question.

Thanks,
Asier
