Acronis Secure Zone - Solved (I no longer use it)

Thread needs solution

Previous to installing build6559 a few days ago, file explorer (Windows 10 64 bit) would display the Acronis Secure zone so I could look at contents. I had to delete the partition, Install build 6559, then recreate ASZ. Now file explorer does not display it. I have to use Easeus Partition Manager to display it now.

If you change your view by selecting This PC can you see the Acronis Secure Zone?

To my way of thinking, this is correct behaviour - the ASZ is a hidden partition and it was an error whereby Acronis gave this partition a drive letter and exposed it to view in Windows Explorer - so it looks like they have fixed that issue in 6559.

As to the issue of file names within the ASZ - that is exactly why I have stopped using it.

It is fine during the backup image creation process that no file name is needed because ASZ takes care of that.

My issue came when I wanted to recover a particuar partition on my dual-boot laptop and Acronis could not show me which backup image file related to which partition backup!  Fortunately, at the time, I had another backup image on an external drive that I was able to restore.  The ASZ was then deleted and I created my own user managed Acronis partition to hold my backup images on the same system, but with a second backup going to my network drive in case of a whole disk failure.

Hello all,

I'm having a similar issue on Acronis 2016. I cannot manually delete a particular backup in the Acronis Secure Zone. The munual on both pages 133 and 134 says that I should be able to delete a given backup.

From manual...p133 and p134...

"When you create an Acronis Secure Zone, it is displayed in the Other section of Windows Explorer. You can navigate through the Acronis Secure Zone as an ordinary partition. Right-click a specific backup or a backup version to view all available operations:  Explore  Mount (for image backups)  Recover  Validate  Update 134 Copyright © Acronis International GmbH, 2002-2016  Remove  View the version's details If Acronis Secure Zone is password-protected, any operation, except viewing version details, requires entering the password. Acronis Secure Zone cleanup If there is not enough space in the Acronis Secure Zone for a new backup, you can:  Cancel the backup operation, increase the size of the Acronis Secure Zone, and then run the backup again.  Cancel the backup operation, manually delete some backups in the Acronis Secure Zone, and then run the backup again."

QUESTION - Is there some simple way of deleting a particular backup version in the acronis secure zone? Or has this capability been eliminated. (I can always delete the entire acronis secure zone but this may remove backups that I want.)

(I want to use an acronis secure zone as extra protection against ransom ware. Maybe they stopped all access to individual backup versions for security reasons???)

Thanks for any help!

George,

I would suggest that the best method of deleting backups in the ASZ (or any other storage location), is to use the automatic cleanup options provided within the Backup Options for each individual task you create - this will give you more control over versions of backups, plus avoid the issues of trying to identify file names used in the ASZ.

Please take a look at Grover's True Image Guides for examples of configuring backup schemes and how automatic cleanup works in reality.

In terms of protection from ransomware then I would recommend having backups on an external disk drive that is not kept permanently connected.  Even the .TIB files in the ASZ are not immune from attack given that they are visible in Windows Explorer, as would be Windows shares that are connected automatically on startup etc.  The other obvious recommendation in this respect is not to use a Windows Administrator account by default as any virus / trojan / malware infection can very easily take full control and soon spread across the whole system as well as inviting all its friends to come join in too.

First of all, thanks for the reply!

1) I do have automatic cleanup setup but sometimes its convenient to just delete a given tib file.

2) I also make backups monthly on a removable drive in case the worse happens.

However, my real question, that I may not of explained well, is that I CANNOT use windows file manager to examine or modify any backup file in the secure zone. I do see the ASZ in the file manager under "other". See "Image 1.jpg" below. Unfortunately, when I double click, nothing happens. Similarly, when I "right click" (opposite click), I do not get an option to open. See "Image 2.png" below. There does not appear to be any way to see inside and delete individual files in the the ASZ?

(When you right click on any other file manager item under computer, you get an option to "open". For example, see "image 3.png" below.)

Did Acronis remove the ability to examine/change backups in the ASZ?

Is your problem a new issue after upgrade to build 6559?

If so I wonder if your password for the Secure Zone has been altered or lost somehow.  You might want to consider changing the password for the Secure Zone as described in the link below:

http://www.acronis.com/en-us/support/documentation/ATI2016/index.html#2…

Do you have other backups that are not in the Secure Zone?  If yes what happens if you right click on those backups?

It appears to me you are running Windows 7, there have been a few instances where the True Image Windows integration did not complete successfully which affected Explorer views and context menus.  A repair on the install may fix this or a full complete uninstall and reinstall should fix that but I consider that an extreme measure to be used as a last resort.

Wow ... thanks for rapid response.

1) I have many backups that are not in a ASZ and they all mount (open) normally through windows file manager.

2) I currently am using build 6559. I do not know if this issue came about with the build 6559 update?

3) And now for the latest twist...

       a) I removed the password from the ASZ. Windows file manager would still not open the ASZ.

       b) I then put back the exact same password and amazingly, windows file manager now opens the ASZ after requesting a password!!! (Just like I thought it was suppose to!)

So I consider this now closed.

Your suggestion to change the password seems to have done the trick. I thank you!

Your welcome,  glad to have been of help

sorry, you are wrong. ASZ is still visable in new release, and should be

ASZ is flaky. I had backups in it, but after installing build 6569, they disappeared. As a test, I did one more backup under 6569. The new backup appeared, as well as the previous backups. Also, file names in the ASZ get a little screwed up, and if you do an Incremental, it will indicate Full, vs incr. in the file name.
