After operation completion, operating systems will not boot from the destination disk in BIOS.

Thread needs solution

I am trying to clone a 1TB hdd spinner to a 256gb SDD... there are about 56gb on the 1TB C:\

every time I start Acronis I get this error message:

Warning! After operation completion, operating systems will not boot from the destination disk in BIOS.

How do I clone a disk so that after completion the operating system will boot?

This is a Dell Studio XPS 9100 64-bit... 12gb RAM, Windows 10...

First, you should perform the clone operation with the machine booted to the Recovery Media not from within the installed Windows application.  Second, when running a clone task you need to make sure that the Shutdown Compluter after task completes is selected and once computer shutsdown disconnect the original source from the computer before you restart the machine.  Third, with laptops the recommended procedure is to first remove the original source disk from the PC and install the new disk in its place.  Then attach the original source disk to the PC via USB connection then, boot the machine to the Recovery Media to perform the clone operation.

Enchantech: tried all three of your suggestions... however, each time I got the warning... After operation completion, operating systems will not boot from the destination disk in BIOS.

Continued with the clone process, but the cloned SSD cannot be read by the bootmgr... strike f1 to try again...

Instead of using the clone operation (if you have an extra USB drive)... use offline bootable recovery media and take a full disk image of your current 1TB drive and save it to an external USB drive.  Swap your 1TB drive for the new SSD and boot back into offline bootable recovery media.  Push the image back to the SSD now (selecting all partitions) since this is going into the same system.  Should boot no problemo as it will format the new drive and make it exactly like the original ... clone should do the same, but I actually find this method to be more reliable.

The error indicates that the media being written to is reporting itself as removeable media.  What make and model of drive is it you are cloning to?

I have tried 3 different ones... 1) two different crucial v4 256gb SSD [CT256V4SSD2] and 2) a Toshiba 500gb Toshiba MQ01ACF050

I really appreciate your assistance with this issue... you have provided some great help... unfortunately, using Acronis True Image 2016... I don't see an option for "take a full disk image" and I'm not familiar enough with backup terminology to know what this means...

The only options on the offline bootable recovery media are backup and recovery...

Are you using a drive enclosure to house the source disk?  You should get yourself a simple USB to SATA data transfer cable to use to attach your source disk to the computer with the SSD installed in the computer where it will remain after the clone operation.

Some external drive enclosures will cause detection issues which sounds like may be your problem
