Automatic deletion of old backup

Thread needs solution

I have a PC with Win 10 and a 1 TB external drive that I use for backup purposes.  I have Acronis True Image installed including the recent update.  When my external drive gets full does Acronis automatically delete the oldest backup to make room for newer backup files?  Similar to a FIFO circuit (First In First Out).  Thank you,  Art

Arthur,

No, it will not automatically groom out.  You will need to create a cleanup task to limit the number of backup version chains retained.  Alternatively, you can manually delete or move full versions chains outside of Acronis (Windows Explorer).  However, this can have negative consequences in the Acronis application since it would not be aware of them.  To update the Acronis database that keeps track of changes, you would need to "validate" or attempt a "recovery" from within Acronis in Windows.  You will then be prompted to locate the missing files or "ignore" them. Ignore each file you are prompted for and that will update the database.

Ideally though, having automated cleanup tasks is the proper/ideal way and should make things easier.

11:25 of this video explains the backup scheme... in this same part of the video at about 17:02, he clicks on the "turn on automatic cleanup" button and this is where you would setup the number of version chains to retain (although he skips right over it).

A sample backup plan with scheduled clean up might look like this:

Backup frequency = 1 time per day

Backup type = custom (incremental)

1 Daily full backup + 6 daily incremental backups = 1 week of backups (this is 1 version chain).  Turn on automatic cleanup and select to keep no more than 4 version chains (this equates to 4 weeks or basically a month).

Once the next full of version chain 5 completes (this is the beginning fo the 5th vesion chain and the trigger point for the cleanup rule), all of the version 1 chain backups will automatically be deleted.  The process will complete after the next full in each new version chain has successfully created.

Thank you very much Bobbo for your prompt and clear reply.  I shall watch the video and follow your instructions.
