Cannot make PE Bootable media in Winows 8.1

Thread needs solution

Whenever I try to make WinPE-based rescue media, I get the error 'Failed to mount the source .wim file'. As Acronis has removed, or hidden any useful configuration settings, I have no idea what WIM file it's looking for, or where. There are WIM files that came with the AIK, but even if that's what it's looking for, where can I put them so TI finds it?

This is happening on both of my Windows 8.1 laptops.

UPDATE: I tried this on my Windows 7 machine as well. I get the same error. Is ANYONE able to make PE Bootable media? Does this function still work in the latest updates?

Hi Cbailey,

Sometimes this problem has been caused when the TEMP folder was configured to point to a non-default location.

If this is your case, try making it point back to C:\Temp,

PLease comment if that helps.

Thanks for the response. Setting the system environment variable TEMP to c:\temp, and then creating the c:/temp directory, seems to have worked. However, I don't think c:\temp has been the default TEMP location since Windows 98. This article can explain it. Shouldn't TI be updated to use the TEMP variable, instead of hardcoding c:\temp? My default TEMP location was %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp. Thanks.
