Can't set up backup to folder defined on C drive

Thread needs solution

I am a IT professional  When I set up backups to external drives for my clients I always define the drive as a folder on the C drive in disk management.  That way if Windows assigns a new drive letter, Acronis will still be able to find the backup folder.  I've been doing this through many verisions of TI.  Now in 2016 when I try to browse to my backup destination the folder on the C drive isn't listed.  I can only define the backup on the external drive by drive letter.  This is a huge problem.  Are others finding this happening to them.

Alan,

Are you using mount points to do this or how exactly are you defining the folder on the C drive?  I myself have not attempted this but seems like it should work.

If you using a mount point I would double check that Windows has not lost that itself creating the problem

Control Panel > Administrative Tasks > Computer Management > Disk Management > Change Drive Letter and Paths > Add > Mount in Empty NTFS Folder.

Go to My Computer > C  - The folder is there.

Acronis > Add backup > Browse for folder > C drive -  The folder isn't listed.

It used to be annoying that Acronis would always say not to create backup on the drive you're backing up. Because with an external drive this is the only way to make sure the backup works if you ever disconnect the drive.  Still, through TI 2015 it worked.  Suddenly with TI2016 the folder isn't even listed when you browse to the C drive looking for the backup folder.  It has to be something Acronis programmers changed.

Alan, this works fine for me in ATIH 2016 provided that the external USB drive is connected when creating the backup task using the mount point.

If I disconnect the USB drive then the mount point is no longer shown as an option.

Alan, further update, having seen this work once then disconnecting the USB drive, I cannot get it to work again and Acronis just doesn't see the mount point anymore - makes me feel like I was seeing things before!

If this was working for you in ATIH 2015, then I would submit a System Report using the Feedback tool in the Acronis GUI and point to this forum post to ask why this isn't working in 2016?  I am not aware of having seen anything to suggest that this particular feature was dropped and can think of no good reason why it should be.

I would also recommend dropping a PM to Gaidar (General Manager Acronis True Image) about this with reference to this post too, as we get quite a few users who could use this feature for exactly the same reason you have been doing - to handle changing drive letters for removable drives!  The MVP's have been advising users to remap their removable drives to letters at the far end of the alphabet to overcome these issues.

Steve,

In terms of the workaround, if I define the external drive as Z, should it always come up as Z?

Thanks,

Al

Steve,

Otherwise I'll do as you suggested and bring it up.  Must have been some change in coding that did this.

Thanks,

Al

I concur with Steve, I use mount points myself so this is a bit disturbing as that is one of the areas I found impressive about the product in the past.  Hope it is an oversight and not a by design thing.

Yes, assigning Z to the drive itself would always stick
