Can't update build 6571 to 6581

Thread needs solution

Hi I am unable to update ATI 2016 to 6581

I get this error:The Installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Acronis\True Image\Tools and Utilities\Bootable Rescue Media Builder.lnk.

I have tried rebooting, I have tried with virus and firewall off. I have turned off that User Account Control and same thing. I am the administrator of my computer and it's only user.

I assume "ProgramData" folder is hidden as I can't find it nor do I know how one would unhide it.

Also support no help as product is over 30 days old even though this update is only 3 days old.

Michelle,

Programdata is a hidden folder.

You can go there, just by copying the path to the folder in Windows file explorer... C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Acronis\True Image\Tools and Utilities

Alternatively, if you click on Tools >>> folder options there is a "view" tab in Windows file explorer as well.  From this tab, under advanced settings is an option to shows hidden, files, folders and drives that you can enable so you can see them automatically.

As for the upgrade issue, I would try to downalod the update from your account first instead of upgrading through the application.  Once downloaded, reboot (just in case).  Then log in and when you go to run the downloaded file, right click on it and "run as administrator" even though you're logged in with an admin account.  This little step gives you higher admin privileges than just logging in with admin (go figure - Microsoft).

Hopefully that helps.  If not, you may have a permission on that file and would need to right click on it >>> properties >>> security >>> advanced >>> click on the owner tab >>> edit >>> select your user account or administrators (assuming your account is in the adminsitrators group.  After taking ownership, go back to security for that fiel again and make sure that you and/or adminsitrators have full access on the file.  Then try the upgrade using the same procedures I mention above.

Oh my God thank you so much for the help. Everyone one of those links in that Tools and Utilities folder had to have their permissions changed which I did. none of them had any permissions at all so I change them all so that I could allow changes to them. I ended up having to change the links also under true image and under Acronis also and after I did that and ran the program it updated successfully!!

Glad it helped.  There's a chance the app was not originally installed using the "run as admin" option which may have not given it enought "admin" access the first time - not really sure why the permissions were borked for you - could be from other local permission changes, possible malware, etc - no way to know really without diving into Windows logs that may or may not provide a clue.

In the futurem, if you need to do this for a number of files, take ownserhsip of the root folder (that will replicate the ownership to all files and folders within it).  Then go back and set the security at the folder as well and that will replicate to the files/folders within it so taht you don't have to do each file indvidually. Just try not to do this often or with primary OS folders (like C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32, etc).  Best to leave the OS folders alone and only do this in situations that really require it.
