Exclude backup destination

Thread needs solution

Hi,

How do I exclude a memory devise from being used for backup? This problem is driving me crazy. My 32gb flash memory is being used for backup. This should not be. Under normal use there is no memory for backup. Therefore, I should not see a "Acronis busy"  message when shutting down. I do not want Acronis running in background until I want to create a backup. All my backups are "full" backups. I do not want differential, cloud, scheduled, background or any other type of backup, except for full. When Acronis is running in background it severely interferes with the computers performance. For example, I run software defined radio software. I use the USB 3 interface to the receiver/transmitter and about 30Mhz of streeming data. For this to work ALL background processes must be stopped.

Sorry for the criticism, but I would rather have direct control over backups than a scheduled or automatic backups.

Using Dell Insprion 13 7000 series, W10, Intel i7 64 bit CPU, lintel graphics 5500.

Rob,

When you setup a backup, you specifically have to pick a destination drive so if it is backign up this device, that's because it was selected as the destination.

If you have no intention of running anything but a full backup and don't want background services running, then you want to create offline bootable recovery media and just use that.  You can then uninstall the application from within Windows, along with all services, executables, etc and just use your offlien bootable recovery media to either backup and/or restore whenever you see fit.

If you have Acronis installed, it's going to use resources.  You can disable the ACronis services manually or with scripts or a number of ways, but then the application won't function properly when you go to use it in Windows and if/when it does run, then those services are going to start on their own again.  I think you'll be happier using the offline bootable recovery media and just sticking with it if you never want to use any features like incremental, differential, schedules, etc.  Plus, by doing backups while the OS is not in use, there is less chance of 3rd party applications, malware, antivirus, or Windows OS trouble getting in teh way since, well, Windows won't be running when you backup the disk while it is not in use.

Rob, if you are seeing "Acronis busy"  message when shutting down then please ensure that you have got the latest build version 6571 of ATIH 2016 installed as this was a known issue with earlier version and fixed in build 6569 and later.

Note: it is recommended to download the latest version installer from your Acronis account and install this as Administrator as some users have hit 'Access Denied' errors when upgrading within the ATIH GUI.
See KB document: 58249: Acronis True Image 2016: Update to Build 6571 Fails with "Access is denied" for if you do see this error on upgrading.

Thnk you Steve for your reply. Yes I do have the latest Acronis True image 2016 software, version 6571. Even though no backup is scheduled or destination selected, I still get "Acronis busy" message on power down. It doesn't happen every time, maybe once a week; but when it does happen I can only suspect that the backup is using my flash media. If the flash media is removed, I never get an "Acronis busy" message. Also the backup files do access the flash memory; as listed in the Windows explorer utility. Regardless, the flash media should never be used for backup; it's too small, 32 GB.

Rob

Thank you for your suggestion Bobbo

I will give it a try, maybe it will be easier to use.

You are correct, when I stop the processes from running, the next time I try and use the software, Acronis will not run. I have to do a re-install to get Acronis running again. Do you think the software developers of Acronis could put a button option that would prevent Acronis from running?

Rob

Rob, have you got any Acronis backup files or folders on your USB flash media?  Or have you used it previously to store Acronis backups?

I would suggest checking through your backup scripts in the C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts - each is a .TIS file which you can open with a text editor and check that none point to either the flash drive, or the drive letter that is normally allocated to the same.  You may want to try pre-allocating a drive letter for the flash drive from much further down the alphabet i.e. drive Z: which will then be reallocated each time the flash drive is connected. The thinking here is that perhaps the flash drive is taking the same letter as one of your external disk drives that is used for backups and Acronis is trying to find the backups for that drive letter.

Rob, you can use these and put the stop one in your Windows startup folder to disable the services automatically (save the .txt as a .bat).  Then, run the startup one when you want to start the services before launching Acronis.  It's not foolproof, but may help for how you're trying to use Acronis if you still want to keep it usable in Windows.  This post has more information and the files you can run as .bat scripts to stop and start the primary Acronis services  You can comment out any of them you want (like I never startup Acronis Nonstop backup service, because I don't use nonstop backups).
