Mark,
The consolidation feature is appealing, but it is fraught with issues: it takes a very long time, and requires a lot of space as the operation is done on copies of original backup files. When the operation completes, the original files are deleted, the new files and remaining ones are renamed... A lot can go wrong.

Keep it simple with cleanup rules. The most reliable one is to keep X backup chains (a chain is full+partials).

Hello Mark,

Thank you for your posting! As underlined by Pat L the program needs some space on the disk to be able to consolidate the files. The extra amount of space can be estimated as the size of the largest backup version in the backup. Please check if there is enough free space. I would also suggest validating the whole archive, as archive contents are read during consolidation and therefore the operation will fail if the archive is corrupted. As workaround you can create full backups more often and delete the old incrementals without consolidation.

Thank you,
