first backup on new windows 10 pc
few days ago i had to replace a windows 7 pc with windows 10 pc. finally got to the point of using ati 2016 for first time last night. schedule backup for 4 a.m. but this morning i found that it failed. tried the backup now button at 8 a.m. and it is still just showing "calculating time remaining " at 4 p.pm. any suggestions on possible action to take would be appreciated.

Logs will certainly help identify the cause. A couple of things you can check for though off the bat - although still blindly without more details and information to go from.
1) is this backing up to a network share? If so, credentials in Acronis probably need to be updated. Windows 10 homegroup and networking shares is a new beast that has had problems along the way. It's often recommended for all systems to leave a homegroup, power them off and power them on one by one, staring the home group with the main pc and then adding each system again. You also want to make sure credentials on the backup share destination give the homegroup MODIFY (read/write) access. If the onld Win 7 system created those shares/permission, they need to be redone again since the accounts on the new Win10 system may look similar, but are actually from different machines.
2) Try disabling VSS and see if the backup runs with the Acronis snapapi technology instead. If it does, Microsoft VSS is the issue,

Where are the backups being written to - network share or another share? It seems like Acronis doesn't have the correct permsissions or is having trouble with VSS. Try disabling VSS first and running the backup to see if it completes after that. If not, need to look at permissions on the destination.

backup is supposed to be to a folder on the C drive. dont understand why ati cant access the drive since it was able to access the files and folders i wanted to select for backup and to create the folder i wanted to backup too. what is vss?

Harold, it is not a good idea to backup to a folder on the same drive that you are backing up from, i.e. from C: to C:
Do you have any other internal or external drives or partitions that you could store the backup image on when created?
VSS = Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service and is used when the source files to be backed up are locked by the system because are in use - the VSS creates a 'shadow' copy of these files to allow them to be backed up.
Perhaps the simplest method of disabling VSS temporarily while you test to see if this is contributing to the problem you are seeing, is to do as follows:
Click on the Start button, then type services to bring up a list of search results.
Choose Services from the list shown, right-click and select to 'Run as administrator'
In the Services panel, scroll down and find Volume Shadow Copy - right-click on this and select Properties.
In the Volume Shadow Copy Properties page, change the Startup type from Manual to Disabled.
Click on OK to save the change.
Note: Repeat the above and change back from Disabled to Manual if the problem is not solved by this change.

steve
thanks for the vss education. i will try those steps. i am waiting for ati to complete whatever it is doing to stop the process. i clicked stop 3 hours ago and left the pc to make sure nothing else was running. if it doesnt end in another hour i will try to stop with task mgr

will go buy an external drive while ati is stopping. thanks all

my ati frustration is getting worse. got a wd passport ultra that connected and initiated to the pc with no issue but selecting external drive as a backup destination is hung up too. the stop function for ati has yet to complete after more than 4 hours. is there another way to kill it?

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and select Task Manager. Use Task Manager to kill the application and/or process.

task manager didnt kill the backup process that is supposed to be stopping. so i ended all ati services and that did the trick. created a new backup and tried backup now and got the "failed to open the computer" error. going to try uninstalling ati and reinstalling it.

Harold, if you are uninstalling / reinstalling ATIH then I recommend running the Acronis Cleanup Tool inbetween the two actions - link in my signature below: The cleanup tool will increase the chances of getting a fully clean install.

Harold, it sounds like you may have a Windows VSS issue on the machine. Please try temporarily disabling VSS and see if Acronis can complete the backup with it's own proprietary snapapi backup option instead of the Microsoft embedded VSS option that Acronis will try to use by default.
Yf you can backup with VSS turned off, it's local to the machine and not Acronis . Give it a try and let us know how it goes. There are 3 ways you can do this. Please refer to the forum post below:
