How does one recover just a single directory from a backup?

Thread needs solution

I just came into the situation that I wanted to recover a directory which I had deleted from my system for space reasons from a backup that I made about a year ago.

So, I opened the backup and navigated to that directory. I then at first wanted to simply drag that directory to a new location. But doing so nothing happens!

I then right-clicked on the folder, selected "Copy" and "Pasted" it to the destined new location on my harddisk. Some wheel starts spinning but after now 25+ minutes still nothing has happened, let alone that the directory or any file got extracted from the backup.

I then fired up Acronis TI to search whether one needs that application to recover a directory, but when I click "recover" this stupid program not only demands a different backup (from a device that I currently have no access to - see also my other thread), it also threates that it will re-instantiate my entire system to the state captured in that backup. This of coures NOT what I want!!! I only want a single directory ONLY to be restored!

How do I achieve that?

I assume you have a full partition or disk image backup. You open the backup imgae (or mount it as a disk) --this opens the backup image as a virtual disk.  then navigate to the directory, right click it and select copy, then paste it where desired on real disk.then copy it.

If you read my append: that is precisely what I was doing. But the "donut" just rotates endlessly and nothing happens! The directory is not copied, i.e. nothing appears at the selected location.

Later append: I just tried that a fourth or fifth time and - surprisingly: this time a popup appeared titled "processing" and now it is indeed restoring files!

But the downside: it initially said, this would take 15 hours! And - judging from the speed in which the files appear - it probably means it!

I am restoring from a Synology Diskstation 415+ NAS, so not exactly a lame duck and this is not a huge directory (a few 100 MBytes). So this is not exactly very convincing!

The speed (or rather: the lack there-of) of TI's restore funtionality is a total killer! It is practically impossible to restore any interestingly sized directory, if such a restore takes more than a night or an entire working day. If one needs to shuttle between places and can't leave the system on and untouched for a day or so, one has lost already!

So, theoretically I may have a number of system backups but practically one can not complete a restore within reasonable time!

Frankly: I am deeply shocked! Not only will I need to search for different and usable backup solution! I also had to realize that all the backups I did during the past half year or so turn out to be a useless pile of junk! Man, am I pissed!
