How to full system restore with Full and Incremental backups in backup set?

Thread needs solution

The instruction manual does not seem to explain how to restore a full system when you have a full system backup plus incremental backups for that full set.  Do you select the Full Backup and restore it?  Do the incrementals associated with set automatically restore as well?

Appreciate any insight you may provide.

Jim, the answer to your question is fairly simple, you select to restore the particular Incremental (or Differential) backup you want to use and then ATIH will take care of using this along with any other required backup files (incremental and full) that are needed to accomplish the restore.

If you select just the full backup image, then none of the changes stored in the incremental image(s) will be restored.

For differential images, you only need the particular one you select plus the full backup as each differential image contains all the changes made to that point from the time that the full image was made.

Thank you Steve.  Sounds easy enough.

One other question; as my 5 TB backup drive starts to fill up, what is the easiest way to delete the backup files i do not need?  I have been booting up the recovery disk and deleting from the utility.  Is that necessary or can I just delete them using Windows File Explorer?

Jim, you should be able to delete unwanted backup files from within Windows Explorer without having to boot from the recovery media.

The only caveats is that you may wish to keep all your incremental images that follow a full backup image, whereas with differential images you can delete any of the unwanted ones of these as each stores all the changes made since the last full backup image.  Full backups can be deleted assuming that you have kept all the different versions you need and are confident in their validity for use in recovery if needed.

Unfortunately, it is not recommenede to delete manaully backup files. It is better to use cleanup rules from ATI to do this for you.

If you do, I recommend you first rename the files you want to delete, then open ATI and try to restore files from the backup. It will tell you it cannot find version x, y or z. Verify these are the files your renamed. If OK, click ignore. Once you are sure your backup is still valid, delete the renamed files.
