How to get ATI2016 Recovery Key to see the Dell XPS 15 9550 512GB SSD (SOLVED)

Thread needs solution

I've been successfully using ATI for years on my successive Dell laptops. When getting my current laptop, a 5 months old Dell XPS 15 9550 512GB SSD  16GB RAM, Win10 Pro, I started to use ATI2016 to backup the SSD contents in various redundant forms (just in case),  Entire PC, C:\ partition for Windows and installed software, D:\ partition for user data

a week ago, this  laptop crashed abruptly displaying error messages like Critical Process Died, DPC Watchdog Violation. Both SSD and Motherboard have been rapidlyreplaced under warranty.

Last ATI backup is dated the day before the laptop crashed, but I couldn't use my ATI Recovery Key to reinstall things (I learnt why later on), so I used the Dell Recovery USB Key I created to have a running machine under Win10.

Found several posts (Thanks Mustang and others) explaining that  Standard Linux based created ATI USB Recovery Key isn't recognized, so I followed the provided instructions to create a WinPE ATI recovery key (ATI software 6571, Win10 1511). Key boots OK,  but as related by many forum messages, the 512GB SSD isn't seen, wh ile USB key and External backup HD are.

Following instructions I found in this forum

- When Win10 boots and runs, Device Manager says that SSD driver is the Intel RST Controller. iaStorA.sys  loaded from oem29.inf

- DISM command DRIVERQUERY shows that Intel RST Drivers iaStora.sys  iaStoraav.sys are included in the boot image loaded into the Recovery Key.

Big mistery !! what is missing ? any idea of why the Dell 512Gb can't be seen when booting the recovery key, despite the apparently needed drivers appear in the WinPE Recovery Key ?

Any idea of what happens and what to do in order to load my backed up disk image ?

After more reading here and there, I decided to perform more experiments

1) set BIOS SATA to ACHI instead of its current defaut RAID. Shutdown

2) Usual Windows 10 boot : it fails with BSOD message No Bootable Media found (no USB key or whatever plugged in, SSD contains what Dell Recovery Installed)

3) reset BIOS SATA to RAID : Windows 10 boots OK

4) set BIOS SATA to AHCI, shutdown, plug my standard WINPE ATI Recovery Key with no drivers added and my USB External HD used for backup.

    Boot from USB Recovery Key

WINPE starts OK and launch ATI2016.

All disks are seen now:  USB recovery key,  External backup HD, and more importantly the 512 GB sSD inside my XPS15

recover whole disk Source=External Disk, Target = SSD.  Works OK (slow, and a few unclear read error messages at the end).

    shutdown

5) unplug USB devices, reboot,  Same BSOD No Bootable Media

6) reset BIOS SATA to RAID. Shutdown, Reboot ...  SSD has been fully restored. Back to my usual W10 working environment

CONCLUSION :  BIOS SATA needs be set to AHCI for WINPE standard ATI Recovery key to see the XPS15 512GB SSD

Problem solved for me after 3 days of investigations. Hope this helps those who hit the same issue

Thanks to all those whose posted messages helped me to restore my XPS 15 environment

mhch is a genious! You saved me a lot of trouble. Everything worked exactly as you described. My system was an Optiplex 5040 using Acronis True Image 2016 from a bootable CD.

In my case regular the SATA drive was showing up with SATA mode set as RAID but NOT the Samsung PRO NVMe SSD with the M.2 form factor. ATI 2016 was saying it could not clone because there was only one disk. When I followed the steps mhch described above, it worked! THANK YOU for taking the time to post your findings.

Glad to see I could help

I wouldn't have been able to fix my own problem without the info found in several forum messages from a number of people, Bobbo_3C0X1, Mustang, Enchantech, etc .. as already mentionned,
