the last backup failed. Impossible to create the snapshot volume

Thread needs solution

Hi,

i just bought the software Acronis True image 2016 and I have the same kind of problem. When I launch the backup, it saved 330 Mo and stop it. After a few minutes, I have the message : the last backup failed. Impossible to create the snapshot volume.

Can you help me please ?

Thanks

I finally find the solution :

Disable Volume Shadow Copy, if other programs do not require running VSS:

  1. Start -> Run -> services.msc
  2. Locate Volume Shadow Copy service, right-click and select Properties.
  3. Set the startup type to Disabled.
  4. Stop the service.
  5. Restart the backup.

I am experiencing the same problem when using Acronis True Image 2016 (ATI-16) running on Windows 7.  For several weeks, the product worked fine but in the last few days it has started with this error.

I have restored the PC using the ATI-16 backup from two weeks ago, but the issue perists.

I have tried disabling the VSS service as described and it does permit the backup to run using the Acronis built-in snapshot tool (I understand from other posts that this is what happens). This allows backups to continue but I would like help with two other things:

  1. Posts relating to other Acronis products indicate that it might be possible to add a pre- and post- command script to the backup so that switching off the Microsoft VSS is automated. Please advise: what is the exact command text required to switch off VSS (pre-command) and switch it back on again after the backup completes (post-command)?
  2. I tried some of the other things mentioned in posts (eg disk check, system report) but these did not get rid of the issue. If I run the 'VSSadmin list writers' command from the MS cmd.exe (also suggested in another post) then, when it is failing, I always see that the 'SQLServer' item has an 'unretryable error'. Before I run ATI-16 all of the VSS writers are in a 'stable' error free state.
  • Q1: is ATI-16 the item shown as SQLServer?
  • Q2: is there a fix for the underlying issue (as opposed to switching off VSS)?

Thanks, Simon

Simon, you can set each individual task to use the Acronis snapshot instead of the VSS, and this will not need you to turn off VSS system wide.

See the instructions in post: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/45832#comment-346558 for how to do this.

Hi Steve

Thanks for that... it would be a perfect sloution... but... in the post you referenced, Slava stated:

"It is also possible to disable VSS usage for a particular backup task without touching Windows VSS service itself:

1) open the folder where your backups settings are saved: C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts

2) each file there stores settings for particular backup job. Open files one-by-one in Notepad, or open latest modified file (if you have just modified your task), until you find the one that has backup name on 5th line, e.g. MyBackups

3) click Edit - Replace and replace use_vss="true" with use_vss="false"

4) save changes and close the file"

However, I can see the TrueImageHome folder but there is no sub-folder called 'Scripts' (see attachment). I did look in my user AppData area (see other attachment) where there is a folder called BackupScripts but this is empty. [... and, yes, 'show hidden files' is ON]

Please advise!!!

Thanks.

Simon, the Scripts folder is in C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts which is probably hidden on your system if you can't see it.  Change the Explorer View options to show hidden files & folders.

You images show you are looking in the wrong places.

Hi Steve. I always have hidden files 'visible' (see attachment) but there is no Acronis folder at all where you describe (2nd attachment). Now I am very confused!

Simon, if you are running Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 or 10, then you need to be looking in the C:\ProgramData folder and not in Program Files.

If you are running Windows XP, then the Scripts folder is found in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts

OK... I found it by running a search in Windows Explorer. I have no idea why this folder is not visible to me when 'Show hidden files, folders and drives' is enabled.

I'll try the fix described by Slava shorthly.

Thanks.
