The last backup has failed. Access to the file or folder is denied.

Thread needs solution

Hi there.

Until now everything was good but yesterday got an error "The last backup has failed. Access to the file or folder is denied.". How can I determine which exactly file or folder is blocking or what is this error about?

Thank you.

Hello Alex,

I am sorry but the log file didn't show anything other than the message Access is denied.

There is no details shown for what type of backup you are trying to perform, what you are backup up (source disk or files or folders etc), where you are backing up to (target drive - local, external, network drive?).

Please take a look at any of the other logs for the same task to see if they offer any more clues.

I'm trying to create (refresh) my cloud backup of entire PC.

All errors are the same.

Local backup works fine.

Recently I removed one of my hard drives but created an exclusion for that drive letter in backup options. I'll try to turn in back and see what happen.

Ok, Alex, that sounds like it could cause an issue if you have previously done an Entire PC backup to the Cloud and now have removed one of the drives that was included in that backup.

It may be worth considering doing a Disks & Partitions type backup instead of Entire PC, as then you can control what is included more easily by having separate backup tasks for each individual disk (or partitions if needed), then if you needed to remove any disk, you could just unschedule or remove the backup for the same.

It is important to know the reasons before discussing the solution for error “access is denied”. Boot sector corruption or file system corruption are responsible for such scenarios. Last week, I personally got similar situation but after lots of attempt, I am able to get out of it. First, check these steps in order to fix “Access is denied”:

  1. Run CHKDSK. If everything is fine with the file system then you need to follow more steps to fix the issue
  2. Modify the permission to the inaccessible drive (file and folder). Right click on drive and choose Properties.
  3. Select Security tab. Click edit in order to change the permissions. Press Advanced Setting for special permissions.
  4. Click Apply and Ok to exit the drive’s properties. Restart the computer and check whether you are able to access file.

Still you are unable to access files then read this article for more details: http://robdawg.com/simple-steps-to-recover-data-from-hard-drive-access-denied
