"No booting device" after using ATI backup

Thread needs solution

Last week I bought a new Laptop Acer Aspire VN7-571G with preinstalled Windows 10, SSD + HDD. I set up only one user (admin) so far. For backup I bought a WD USB 3 Drive. I installed True Image WD Edition.

As recommanded by Acer I created a external recovery volume. With no 32 GB USB stick at hand, I decided to partition the WD USB Drive in RECOVERY (32 GB FAT) and Backups (1,8 TB NTFS).

I purchased & installed True Image 2016 upgrade (Build 6027). No probs so far.

Problems:

1. After start up True Image nags for cloud service, despite I opted for a version called without cloud. Asking one time again is ok. Asking 3 times is annoying. Asking 10 times is unpolite, asking 20 times makes me AGRESSIVE AND THINKING BAD OF ACRONIS.

2. I have set generell magnification to 150 % in Windows 10. True Image is ignoring this. Usually apps that don't care about magnifacation have soft fonts, but font size is as desired. Not so True Image, True Image 2016 is the only app on my PC where font size is fixed at a very small size

3. I cklicked please install Acronis recovery booting. But after restart there is no. The only effect was: In Windows Explorer I see now the before hidden partions EFI and Recovery. ??

4. I clicked please create Acronis secure zone on HDD (D:). No error message. But in True Image I can't find secure zone as backup destination. In Windows disk management I can't see any changes for D: ???

5. I clicked create Full Backup of Computer with following settings:

- destination: external USB HDD partition Backups

- incremental

- inklude Acronis True Image (recovery boot?) software

- shut down after backup

The Laptop switched on again leads to "no booting device". ????

My not successfull tries for repair:

If the USB HDD is connected, something is coming up in blue Windows 10 Design. There I tried:

- repair windows booting. No succes, error log is stored somewhere on D: A place I have no access to anymore

- System restore. I went back to a restore point before True Image 2016 upgrade. It says successfull. But no booting. :-((

- Booting with pressed F12: only one booting possibility called USB

- Creating Acronis Reovery CD is still on my to do list.

- Looking into the Backup HDD on a other PC, there ist a backup file with 26 GB in size, but what gives?

I need help!

Ich kenne die Gepflogenheiten hier nicht, aber Antworten in deutsch sind mir auch willkommen. :-)

More not successfull tries:

- I switched UEFI to legacy boot. The windows startup repair tool failed again, as in secure boot.

6. I've set the option "include true image software" in backup. Where is it? I have looked on a other computer for it. I only see "Kompletter PC(NAME-ACER)_full_b2_s1_v1.tib". How to create a Acronis Startup Medium now?

7. New error!

I put the USB backup drive back to the acer. The acer can't boot from it anymore. :-(

"Recovery - Your PC/Device needs to be repaired - A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. - Error code: 0xc000000e - You'll need to use recovery ..."

The other computer I plugged in the backup drive hapend to be a Mac. I hav'nt changed anything. I only noticed, there now is a new partition, I havn't seen earlier: "Acer Recovery" (16 GB). So the Mac has ruined The Windows/Acer Recovery??

What I've seen bevore the True Image backup:

I deleted all (invisible) files the Mac had added. I used this tool:

https://itunes.apple.com/de/app/cleanmydrive-2-externe-volumes/id523620…

Unfortunatly the Acer still can't use the backup drive for booting.

The story of not successfull booting goes on.

I reseted the battery with a paperclip through a tiny whole in the back of the Acer laptop, as described in manual. Still, "no booting device" found.

Luckily my brother had a Acronis Recovery CD made with True Image 2016. He complained, the creation of this Acronis recovery PE media was heavy lifting, including a 5 GB download from Microsoft. The usual Linux based Acronis recovery media didn't work on his new Windows 10 convertible.

So I reseted the UEFI to default and started via Acronis CD. Hey, some kind of booting device! First try:

- restored the MBR of the SSD > error (see attached screenshot)

- restored EFI, MBR of SSD & HDD > Acronis sayed restore complet, but no booting from internal disk

So no help from Acronis backup & recovery.

I don't know why, but the (Acer) recovery on the USB backup drive worked again.

- I tried the system recovery, but that didn't work. After theh first reboot, again there was the blue Windows 10 recovery interface. Tried more than one time.

My brother also had a USB Stick for Windows 10 home installation

- I started from the stick, in Windows setup I deleted partition Acer (C:) with Windows 10, Acer had put there. Installation went on, reboot > Welcome to Window 10 Setup > reboot > Welcome to Window 10 Setup > reboot > Welcome to Window 10 Setup > reboot > Welcome to Window 10 Setup > reboot > Welcome to Window 10 Setup > reboot > Welcome to Window 10 Setup

I had very rich & interesting sunday, but for now it's about time for bedtime.

I called the Acer support. They said probably the partition table of the SSD is damaged. (I say, probably through Acronis True Image). So, I booted Windows 10 Setup from USB Stick, deleted the SSD completly (EFI, MBR, MSR, Acer (Windows 10 System), Recovery), installed Windows 10. Booted True Image Recovery from CD and recoverd Acer, Recovery to System, Recovery. Computer booted. :-)  Everthing looks and works as before the backup with True Image, as far as I can tell after 10 minutes playing araound. Exception: partitions EFI and Recovery are no longer present in Window Explorer. All Windows restore points are lost. I can deal with that.

Remaining questions are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 - please see above.

Most important questions are:

- Can I use Acronis Backup on this computer without True Image putting the computer completly out of order after backups?

- How to set up Acronis Secure Zone for nonstop backup? Please see Problem 4 in first post.

Aargh. Partitions Recovery and EFI, without letters in Disk Management are present in Windows Explorer as G: & H:  How to make them disapear there?

A important note for everybody, who likes to have his Chrome settings and bookmarks restored from a True Image backup. Probably, this is true for other browsers as well.

If you choose backup "Complete PC", you need additionally go to options > exclude and delete the path to your browsers User Data, which are excluded from backup by Acronis default.

As not a native speaker, I am a little shy about telling Acronis the meaning of the word complete. I let Merriam-Webster do it for me:

- having all necessary parts, not lacking anything
- not limited in any way
- not requiring more work, entirely done or completed

Blueman,

This info will not help you with ALL your other recovery problems but on Chrome, if you go to settings and signin to Chrome and sync EVERYTHING, all your bookmarks, extensions, setting will be saved so you won't need ATIH to save that info, just signin to Chrome settings and login and most everything will be saved from the Chrome server for your user ID back to your computer...

Thank You Steve1209. I know of this possibiltiy to store my personal Chrome stuff in the Google cloud. I choosesd a different solution, because I thought, it would be simpler to backup everything, including the settings of all applications, inkluding chrome.

Rough translation:

Acronis support sended a "solution" concerning 4. Secure Zone: "Try again to create a Secure Zone".

No change though.

Acronis support had the right idea. Today I tried again to create a Secure Zone and it worked! The Secure Zone is visible in True Image, Windows Disk Management & in Windows Explorer (??).

8. Next Problem:

I created a nonstop Backup of some folders with backup destination Secure Zone (on internal HDD). But I cant look into the backup, nor recover any file. I can't see a restore knob:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2983581/Acronis%20True%20Image/Wied…

I excluded the option 'include True Image Software in backup' and did succussfully a complete backup of the whole PC. The Acers is still booting. Uff. For that backup there are restore buttons.

The remaining really important problem is this new question #8 - malfunction of Secure Zone nonstop backup.

Nice to have would be a solution to questions #1, #2 & #3.

A explanation how to avoid the worst case scenario of #5 would be appreciated.

8a. Clicking 'Pause' für the nonstop backup changes the knob to 'options'. But the allready set options are not visable, only the default options. ??  New options für non stop backup are not accepted. ???

9. Shuting down the computer leads to:

"Acronis True Image is terminating the curret operations, please wait. The computer will be turned off automatically in about two minutes."

After 120 minutes I force quited the PC. :-(

I got an update from development team. They are reviewing the issues - seems like a few problems appear in your configuration. They've included it into the list of tasks for the next update. Meanwhile support team will help you to resolve the immediate problems.
