Problem Backing up to an external USB Drive

Thread needs solution

Hello,

Although i bought Acronis i long time ago, only recently i started to use it..and im constantly facing the same problem..

I have an external drive (for example G:) to which i saved my backup...and everytime i finish the backup, i tend to then disconnect this Drive due to common power issues in my region...problem starts when i plug it in again after say, 1 or 2 days and wanna do incremental backups...it will change the drive letter (now it can be I: for example) because i might have another flash or usb drive connected at that moment that took over the drive letter the first one had..this is very common..

Even if i redirect acronis to the new location, it will want to start a full Backup all over again...and i already have  6 files in there..the full(1) and the incrementals (5)...

What can i do for Acronis to recognize the files and just continue updating incrementally?

if the name of the first full backup is "Entire PC (MSI)_full_b1_s1_v1.tib", it will create a "Entire PC (MSI)_full_b1_s1_v2.tib"

Hello Nildo, unfortunately this is a situation where Acronis requires to find the external USB drive using the same drive letter each time the application is launched as this information is stored within the Acronis Database files which hold the details of what backups have been performed, and what the next backup type should be.

All I can suggest is to allocated a new drive letter such as U: to your external USB drive where that letter won't be used by any other devices that you may plug in to your computer in between backup times.  Make sure that you have the USB drive plugged in before launching the Acronis application and see if that will resolve the issue.   This will still create a new full backup on the first time of using plus you would be recommended to create a new backup task to point at the new drive letter rather than alter an existing task, as the old drive letter will still be recorded in the database for that old task.

To allocate a constant drive letter to your USB drive, do the following:

- plug the UBS drive in the machine,

- launch the windows disk management console (you can search for "partitions" as on win10, the tools is name "create and format hard disk partitions" control panel)

- right click on the hatched area corresponding to your USB disk

- choose change drive letter and paths

- assign a drive letter towards the end  of the alphabet (Steve is proposing letter "U" above, but it can be anything)

- then set ATI (True IMage) to store the backup on that disk. NOTE: it is advisble to start a new backup task on that disk, otherwise ATI will think you have different archive files on different disks and will ask you for these disks when you restore.

Thanks both of you for replying...im gonna set drive as "Z:" as i NEVER got to that letter before..hopefully that fixes the issue
