Problem With Recovery of Partition to New SSD using Recovery Wizard

Thread needs solution

I am trying to  recover a Win 7 os and System resereved partition backed up to my usb external storage and to be recovered to a new SSD drive.

Problem:

When I boot from the created bootable media device cd and from the recovery wizard it asks for the new location where the partition is to be installed to. My system does not recognize the new drive to be used that is the only sdd or hd connected at this time.  Does this drive need to be initialized, formatted and partitioned prior to recovery?

Debra, you have not mentioned what type of new SSD drive you are trying to restore your backup?

I would suspect that your created bootable media is using the standard Linux environment and does not have the necessary device drivers to recognise your new SSD drive.  If this is the case, then you would need to create the alternative Windows PE Rescue Media which will have a lot more device drivers that are provided by the Microsoft Windows ADK that is used to create the media.

If you can still boot your Windows 7 system on the previous disk drive, then creating the WinPE media from that device would be best, but otherwise you would need to try to create this on a different device, assuming that you have access to one.

I really do not understand the question "what type of new ssd drive" - my knowledge is limited.  And yes, the bootable was created without the PE.  Will I need to initialize, format or partition the new SSD prior to recovery of the backed up partitions?  The backed up partitions show 2, one is the system reserved and the second is windows.

Debra, sorry if you do not understand the question - there are a range of different SSD drives available these days with an equal range of different technologies that are used for them, thus your recovery media needs to understand how to both recognise and use the SSD when it encounters it.  What make and model of SSD are you trying to restore to?

There is no need to initialise, format or partition the new SSD drive as Acronis will do all that for you assuming that when you backed up the old drive that you did so for the 'entire' drive (all partitions), and are taking the same choice to restore the 'entire' disk when restoring the image.

As your new SSD is not being recognised as being present for your bootable rescue media CD you will need to create a Windows PE version of bootable rescue media.

Very good, now I understand.  The ssd drive is a ocz trion 150, 240 gig drive.  I did not use the `entire`disk option but used the partition instead.  Therefore based on your reply it will not reformate etc which means I need to manually do that I presume.  Also the drive has not be assigned a drive letter, does that matter since I and recovering the complete partitions?

Thanks

OK, when you are able to recognise the new OCZ Trion SSD drive, then you will need to ensure that you restore your partitions in the correct order, i.e. the System Reserved partition first, followed by your Windows 7 partition (assuming your system follows the normal pattern), so there is no need to manually set partition sizes, just restore the partitions in the correct order.  The only other consideration is if your new drive is smaller than the old one that the backup image came from, in which case you will need to let ATIH shrink the Windows 7 partition to fit on the new drive.

The key question I guess is whether you are able to create the Win PE rescue media in order to do the restore?

Yes I can create another bootable media cd using another win 7 drive.  Just curious, could I not put the new ssd drive in as a secondary drive and boot the machine using another win 7 drive as well?  THen boot the machine as normal and start ATI and recover that way?

Debra, if you have the option of connecting the SSD as a secondary drive in a Win 7 system that can recognise it without issue, then yes, you could restore the image to the SSD in that way.

I very much appreciate your help and will update following recovery.  Have a great upcoming weekend!
