Question about serial numbers in a MAC

Thread needs solution

I know absolutely nothing about a MAC, but I have a friend that swears by it.  Their only complaint is that when they do a backup using the backup software included with the MAC they have to find all of their old serial numbers and put them back in to get all of the Microsoft products to work when the do a recover operation.  They use an external USB type drive (WD Passport) for their backups and I am making an assumption that the MAC software must be performing some type of partition backup as my friends say that everything restores just fine except the serial numbers which they must re-enter.

I know that with True Image on the PC I can restore a partition backup and everything including the serial numbers are restored to my PCs.  Does True Image work the same with MAC and do all programs work as they previously did without having to re-enter all of the serial numbers?  If it does then I feel confident that my friends can be persuaded to buy True Image.
