Uninstallation Failed

Thread needs solution

I got the following error when I tried to uninstall Acronis 2016:

Could not update the ini file C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Acronis\True Image\User's guide.url.

I tried downloading and installing the trial version of Acronis 2017 thinking that might resolve the problem. I got the following error installing Acronis 2017:

The Installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Acronis\True Image\Tools and Utilities\Bootable Rescue Media Builder.lnk.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Donald, are you performing these actions when running as Administrator?  Acronis needs administrator privileges in order to perform most of its actions on your system.

The resolution to the uninstallationproblem was an Acronis Cleanup Utility. Having finally uninstalled Acronis 2016, I tried to install Acronis 2017. Unfortunately, the installation didn't complete due to the following error:

The Installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Acronis\True Image\Tools and Utilities\Bootable Rescue Media Builder.lnk.

I was logged in as Administrator at the time of the installation. Please advise me of a solution to this problem, if you know of one.

Donald, do you have multiple user accounts on your computer system, as it is possible that this type of problem could be caused if the file in question was created by a different user?

Have same problem: The Installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Acronis\True Image\Tools and Utilities\Bootable Rescue Media Builder.lnk. None of the above solutions help. I'm the only user and I'm the administrator

Keith, have you checked the permissions for the problem lnk object and tried to take over ownership of this?

If there is a leftover directory C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Acronis\...

See if you can manually delete that Acronis folder yourself by navigating to it in Windows file explorer. If you can't, you'll need to take ownership as Steve suggested, then manually delete it.  If you can't delete it with an admin account, neither can the acronis installer.  What would have caused this permission issue?  I can't say. Malware, disk permission issues, OS corruption issues, users setting permsissions on folders they shouldn't be - a lot of possibilities. For whatever reason though, the owner on that folder and/or file seems to be out of whack and taking ownership of the folder and manually deleting should then allow Acronis to recreate it with the correct permissions during the install.

Whenever you run an application installer or updater, always make sure you do so by right clicking and selecting the option to "run as administrator" even if you're already logged in with an admin account.  UAC prevents even a logged on admin from having full administrative access even if they are logged in as an admin.

Want to test to verify why this is important?

Open a regular command prompt and type:

nbtstat -R
Failed to Purge the NBT Remote Cache Table.

Now open an elevated command prompt using the right click and run as administrator option

nbtstat -R
Successful purge and preload of the NBT Remote Cache Name Table.

It only works because of the higher elevated privileges and this is why it's important to make sure to install with the highest access possible (to ensure that the installer has the necessary rights to modify certain files/folders that require the higher access).
