Using UNC path for local drive
I'm interested in using a UNC path for my Windows backups, to hopefully guard against ransomware encrypting where my backups are saved. True Image can find the drive when I use \\localhost\x$\foldername, but prompts for a user account. When I enter the admin account name and click "Test connection" the connection fails. I am entering the credentials correctly.
How do I get True Image 2016 to use a UNC path on my PC?

If the admin shares aren't working (I'd have to test again to be sure, but currently don't have time), could you create an actual share instead and try that instead?

The credentials needed are the username/password to the UNC share not your Windows admin credentials. This is a shortcoming in the product that hopefully should be fixed soon.
