ATI 2017 Recovery Warning

Thread needs solution

trying to recover Acronis image from 4 days ago when printer was still working (ancient printer not want to work with Windows 10 and no updated driver available, but somehow got it to work through router for the last year until I messed that up trying to find and install new driver)

recovering entire disk 1

warning message: "After operation completion operating system will not boot from the destination disk in BIOS"

Not sure if that is a problem or not so cancelled out.

When booted from Acronis Recovery flashdrive changed boot order to boot from Acronis flashdrive, but was only a temporary change, and boots as regular next time, so unsure what message means.

Advice or reassurance would be most appreciated.

Welcome to these User Forums.

The error message "After operation completion operating system will not boot from the destination disk in BIOS"  is given when you are attempting to recover in a different BIOS mode than used by your Windows OS.

The Acronis Rescue Media can be booted in either Legacy/CSM or in UEFI modes but this must match how your Windows OS uses.  Run the msinfo32 command in Windows to check what mode is used for BIOS mode in the report shown.

See KB 59877: Acronis True Image 2017: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media  for more information on the boot modes.

See forum topic: Warning "After operation completion, operating systems will not boot from destination disk in the BIOS"  where this has been raised before.

Steve,

Many thanks for the quick response.  Using your advise, I have discovered (as you suspected) that my Windows 10 desktop BIOS is UEFI while my Acronis Bootable Media is booting up in Legacy/CSM.

Would greatly appreciate your further advice as to how I resolve this conflict.  Do I need to create a different type of Acronis bootable media?  Is there a switch in the creation process or the booting up that I missed?

I did check the forum topic but most of the situations were about people making clone disks and running into this problem, and I did not understand the resolution for the problem.

Again, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

What type of Rescue Media are you using for this recovery?  Is this on a CD/DVD or on a USB memory stick?

CD media is not always supported for UEFI mode on some systems, i.e. a UEFI option for the CD/DVD drive boot is not given?

There are also several different types of Rescue Media - the original default uses a Linux kernel to boot into the standalone ATI application, but with ATI 2018, Acronis will try to make Windows PE Rescue Media, first trying to use the Windows Recovery Environment then from the Windows 10 ADK if this is installed, before falling back to the Linux media.

One option that you can try is to go into your BIOS settings to change the Boot options to only use UEFI, and not provide a Legacy/CSM boot option.

See the screen images below showing what you can look for on the Boot menu, where there can be two entries for a boot device, one for Legacy, the other for UEFI.

Steve,  All sorted.  Much appreciated.  I just needed to understand the terminology and the essence of the problem.

In hindsight, I should have been more observant on booting from the Acronis Rescue Medium (a USB flashdrive).  There was indeed another option to boot in UEFI, and when I did so was able to recover from my backup and all is running to perfection now.

Many thanks for the advice and patience.

Glad to have been able to help, and good to hear that all is now resolved successfully, thanks for the feedback.
