Deleting Old Backup Chains

Thread needs solution

I have ATI 2017 Build 8053.

I have a full backup job that is configured to do incremenatal backups with a full version after every 5.

I thought that I had configured automatic cleanup, but I noticed that the backup volume was getting full and when I checked, automatic cleanup was off.

I've now configured automatic cleanup to store no more than 4 recent version chains ... but there are currently 8 version chains (and it's working on the 9th).

Now that I've configured automatic cleanup, will the old chains be pruned as soon as the next scheduled backup starts or will I have to manually delete them?  If I have to delete them manually, how do I do that?

Pete, automatic cleanup works on the principle of completed version chains, so as you have only just enabled this, it is not likely to run until your current version chain is considered to be complete which is when the next full backup file is created for a further new version chain.

If your backup drive doesn't have sufficient free space to hold the further backups needed to achieve a completed version chain, then you can delete the oldest backup version chain(s) manually using Windows Explorer, but you will then need to do a Validation for your Backup task after doing so in order to reconcile the information stored in the Acronis Database with the status of the remaining files on your backup drive.  When you do the Validation you will get a pop-up message for each deleted backup file it encounters that you should take the Ignore option for.

Thanks for the quick response.

After I enabled automatic cleanup, it did another incremental and did not clean up the old chains.  That was the 4th of the 5 incremenatals, so I'll wait for the next incremental, which will be followed by a full backup.  Fortunately, the backup volume has enough space to deal with this, so I'll wait until after the current version chain is completed before doing any manual deletions.

Pete, that should do the trick and automatic cleanup should run when the next full backup is created successfully.
