External Hard Drive

I have installed Acronis Trueimage 2017 which I used before a factory reset to my laptop. I have added the WD external hard drive, checked properties and the device is working perfectly. It shows on the list of Printers and Devices in Windows 10 OS.

When I try to create a backup and click on destination, I get a message to plug in the external hard drive. It is plugged in but it is not being recognized.

What steps can I try to fix the problem ?

Deane, my first question is to ask whether your external drive has been given the same drive letter as was used by ATI 2017 previously?  If not, then this may be the reason it cannot find it.

The external hard drive has now been assigned E which was the previous drive.

Still not recognizing the drive.

I will restart the laptop and see if that helps.

Thank you for the reply

I have done he following: Uninstalled and reinstalled the external hdd. Opened Acronis and opened tools and selected Clean Drive and the C drive was listed and so was the E drive, the external hdd. But Acronis did not recognize the external hdd when I selected a destination.

When I open Printers and Devices, the external hdd is shown and is shown as connected and working properly.

What else can I try ?

Thank you for your response.

Dean, how is the external drive formatted?  Is it NTFS, FAT32 or something different like exFAT, EXT4 etc?  See the ATI 2019 User Guide: Supported File Systems for a list of what is supported and how.

Support for exFAT was added in ATI 2019, so that could be an issue as many external drives are formatted using exFAT.

Hi Ian:

I resolved the problem by running Clone Disk and the external hdd was recognized, erased some old data and completed the task. Went back to the Backup and it accepted the ext hd as the destination for the backup which I did immediately. A huge relief !

Thank you for the information.

Hi Deane, glad you managed to overcome the problem.

Can I install Acronis 2019 on either an USB connected external Hard Drive or
a 64 GB USB flash drive and run the program from there?

David, ATI 2019 cannot be installed anywhere other than the default C:\ProgramFiles (x86)\Acronis folder path, there are no options to install to a custom / user selected location.

Once you have ATI 2019 installed, then you can use the option to create an Acronis Survival Kit drive on your external HDD and use the remainder of that drive to store your backup images.
