I can't open my backup

Thread needs solution

Hello!

I hope my English is good enouph to explain the curiosity.
With Acronis True Image 2010 I made some backups in the last years with the bootable CD.
And when I needed some files, I could open this backup an could copy the needed files.

But sometimes those backups can't be opened. I received the message, that they are demaged.
But this information was wrong, because I can recover my pc with this backup.

With double-click the backup will not open correctly. And so I was looking for the process, who would open
this backup. Is was always the Windows Exlorer. There are some backups and I could open them with the
Windows Explorer. Other backups failed.

So I was locking for the .exe file, who can open the .tif file. But I did not find this file.

Can you help me to open those files correctly?

Regards

Valeri, welcome to these user forums.

What actual version of Acronis True Image are you using here?   This forum is for ATIH 2017 which is the latest version of the product to be released, and there are other forums for the 2016, 2015 and one for all older products such as ATIH 2010.

What version of Windows OS are you using when you are trying to open your backup image files?

The integration of Acronis True Image with Windows Explorer depends on both the version of Windows and the version of True Image.

If you have ATI backup image files that were created by ATIH 2010 then your Windows OS would need to be Windows XP, Vista or 7 for the integration to be working correctly, otherwise you will need to use your ATIH 2010 bootable Rescue CD to access the files in the backup image.

Hello Steve!

I use Acronis True Image 17. Using it with Windows 7 64bit.
A few hours ago I did a backup of C: with my new version 17. And I did it without a boot-CD.
And this file I can open.

But what have I to do, if c: is broken? How can I recover the file to the new c: without a bootable CD?

Oh, my english ist bad enough, I think :-D

Valeri, thank you for the further information.  Your English is very much better than any of my attempts to speak any other languages!

Please see KB 1689: Backup Archive Compatibility Across Different Product Versions as reference for which backup image files created by other versions of Acronis True Image are compatible with your ATIH 2017 version.

If you get to a situation where your main OS drive (C:) is broken, then you will need the Acronis bootable Rescue Media in order to recover your Disks & Partitions or Entire PC backup image to a replacement disk drive.

It is always recommended that you should create the Rescue Media a long time before you will ever need to use it in an emergency scenario, and then test that Rescue Media will boot correctly on your computer and be able to see all of your internal and external disk drives.

See KB 58816: Acronis True Image 2017: Creating Acronis Bootable Media for an overview of how to create this media.  I would recommend creating this on a USB memory stick (1GB minimum to 32GB maximum size) as this is the most flexible and is often more widely acceptible than using CD/DVD media on modern computer systems.

Note: If the Standard (Linux based) Rescue Media either does not work or boot correctly or cannot see all your disk drives, then you should make the Windows PE version of the Media which uses the Windows 10 ADK and offers the highest level of device support and compatibility.

Hi Steve!

I'm sure, that I found out how to can open the tib-file! Many people have the same problem and I hope, that now nearley everyone cann open the file.

You have to do this:

Right mouseclick on the file, than open"properties", than mouseclick on "security", than mouseclick on "continue" and than mouseclick on "add".

Type in the name of your username, check your name (maybe it now looks like "PC\username") give ypur username complete access. And after you click OK and OK you can open the file! I will write it also in German, therewith others could find this page too.

Valeri, thank you for posting the further information.  The steps you gave should only be necessary if your are given an error that you do not have permission to access the backup image file, as otherwise you should just be able to double-click on the file and open it.

Thanks, Valeri, the message includes the phrase: "or you do not have enough permissions to perform the operation." which validates your approach to modify the security properites of the image file to grant permission to your user.

you are right, but most users only read the first sentence bevore "or you..." and than they give up. But what cares? I can read my files :-)

Valeri, that is the key point of importance here!  You can read your files!
