mirror image recovery corrupted my drive

Thread needs solution

I recovered my pc with Acronis True Image and have not been able to reboot my machine.  A series of phone calls and emails to customer service has not resulted in any satisfaction.  My Windows recovery disk provides repair tools, none of which work. Command line lets me run boot repair commands, which are not successful.  No device--CD, USB, hard drive--is recognized.  I don't think there is any hope of recovering via the mirror image and I fear I will have to buy a new pc and recover my files from the cloud backup minus all my programs which will have to be reinstalled.  Acronis seems to think I can provide them with some error log from the Acronis recovery disk but I cannot boot to the CD or ANY other device.  This is a result of simply trying to recover a day-old backup.  Anyone else heard of this situation or have any insight?

eastwest, sorry to hear of your problem but there is not enough information for us to best understand what has been done here and why?

What type of computer do you have here (is it the Dell Inspiron i7 shown in your signature)?
What version of Windows OS was installed? (Windows 7, 8.1, 10 - 32bit or 64bit?).
What type of Acronis backup image file do you have?
Is this a Disks & Partitions backup (required for restoring the Windows OS & programs) or is it a Files & Folders backup image?
How does your Windows OS boot on your computer?  Is this a UEFI system or is it booting in Legacy/CSM mode?
Note: If you have a Disks & Partitions backup, looking at the contents of this can help identify how Windows boots, i.e. if you see a Microsoft System Reserved partition, it is most likely a Legacy/CSM boot; if you see an EFI partition or the disk is in GPT format, then it is a UEFI boot system.

Further questions which are important:

How is your OS drive configured in the computer BIOS, i.e. is this set to AHCI for the SATA mode, or is it set to RAID?  If the latter, then the standard Acronis bootable Rescue Media cannot be used to restore a RAID backup as it has no device support for RAID.

Do you have another computer with ATIH 2017 installed that could be used to create the Windows PE version of the Acronis Rescue Media?  This may be needed if you have either RAID, or have drives which are not supported by the standard rescue media, i.e. some M.2 type SSD drives or where additional device drivers need to be injected in to the media.

With regards to logs - there are logs available when running the Acronis Rescue Media but these are only temporary and are lost as soon as you restart the computer, so have to be accessed / saved while in the True Image application running from the booted media.

I have windiws10 pro 64 bit,  Attempts to boot Legacy or UEFI all fail. There is no way of knowing about the other settings as I cannot boot to any device or read the external hard drive in any way.  I set up mirror instructions in good faith that I could mirror the hard drive to restore to the same drive and now there are questions about RAID and SATA.

eastwest, ok, so you have Windows 10 Pro 64-bit which is a start for our understanding.

We are just other users here and have no access to any information that you may have already shared with Acronis in your conversations with them.

Sorry but when you talk about 'mirror instructions' and so that you could mirror the hard drive - this is not a term that is used for Acronis True Image and not one used here in these forums, so can you unpack what you mean by this please?

When you say that 'attempts to boot Legacy or UEFI all fail' - what exactly are you attempting to boot?  Is this the hard drive or does this statement apply also to USB sticks / optical media etc?

Please take us through the steps that you have performed that lead to this unbootable system?

When I say "mirror instructions" I'm simply referring to following the menus within Acronis to recover my pc. My attempts were to make changes in BIOS in boot priority in my Dell Inspiron to boot from hard drive, cd drive, USB drive.  "No boot device Found"

i have Acronis recovery disk on cd and flash drive but they are both useless when I can't boot to any drive.

Sorry, this feels like an exercise in pulling hens teeth to try to understand the situation here?

What menus within Acronis are you following?  Do you have Acronis running as an active application or are you referring to the Acronis True Image User Guide / Help information?  If the latter, what section are you following?

See the ATIH 2017 User Guide for the online version of this manual / Help information - please direct us to the section you are following?

Please also try to answer the initial questions I asked in my first response to you.

If your Windows 10 installation was/is a UEFI boot which I am guessing it is then you cannot boot the hard drive directly by selecting the drive in the boot priority list of the bios.  You must look for an entry named Windows Boot Manager and make sure that it is first in the boot priority list to boot the hard drive.  For this to work the bios needs to be set to boot via UEFI first, Legacy/CSM second.

To boot media, CD or USB you must look for the media device name which is preceded by the letters UEFI and make that first in the priority list.

It's either Legacy with these options

    CD DVD

    Hard Drive

    Network

or UEFI

    Windows boot manager (Samsung ssd)

No UEFI option is under Legacy.  I can change the device order under Legacy but no option works.

What happens when you select Windows Boot Manager (UEFI) to boot from the SSD?

I get blue screen Your pc/device needs to be repaired.  Tells me to use recovery tools.  I can only access recovery tools menu these thru Windows recovery disk but they have not been successful.

Ok, thank you for the blue screen info, so now can we establish what type of Acronis backup image you have that you are trying to recover from (restore from), and what Acronis bootable Rescue Media you are trying to use?

As you get the blue screen when selecting Windows Boot Manager, we have established that you have a UEFI system, so any Acronis Rescue Media needs to be booted in UEFI mode, so if the media is on CD or USB stick, you would need to select the UEFI option for the CD drive or the USB storage.

For Dell systems, you can normally hit the F12 key on boot to bring up the boot device selection menu without having to change the BIOS boot priority settings, however, you may need to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS settings if you are booting from the standard, Linux based, Acronis Rescue Media.

Acronis mirror image.

i have rescue media on CD and USB stick.

I have disabled secure boot.  I selected UEFI and Boot List option = Legacy since CD and USB appear only under Legacy.

Result is black screen and error

Exiting PXE ROM. No Boot Device Found

Sorry but this is going round in circles.

What do you mean by "Acronis mirror image" - this is not a term used for Acronis True Image backups?

If you mean that you have 'Cloned' your Windows OS SSD drive to a second disk drive, then this would be a duplicate drive with an identical drive signature as the original.  If you have such a cloned disk drive, then you would need to remove the original SSD and replace this with the cloned drive, then attempt to boot from this (after confirming that the Windows Boot Manager for the cloned drive is selected in the Boot Priority settings in the BIOS after the drive is installed in place of the SSD).

With regards to the black screen and error when booting in Legacy mode - this is expected when you have a UEFI system and the Acronis Rescue Media must be booted in UEFI mode (NOT in Legacy).

If you are not seeing UEFI options for your CD drive or USB storage, then it is possible that the media has not been created correctly as both types of Acronis media are capable of booting in both UEFI and Legacy mode (according to the system where it needs to be used).
