Need help testing recovery from a disk backup

Thread needs solution

The motherbaord is an Asus B85M-E.

I am running Win 7 SP1, fully patched with GWX Control Panel hopefully preventing upgrading to Win 10.

Here is what I done so far:

Creating the backup

  • I used partition and disk backup, selecting the Reserved partition plus all volumes on the SSD. This drive is Dynamic MBR. All volumes are contiguous.
  • I backed up to a new folder, Petra backups, on the Seaagate Backup Plus drive. There are also backups for 2 other PCs in other folders on this drive. They were created with ATI 2013  and ATI 2015.

Creating the Rescue CD (actually a DVD)

•    I downloaded AcronisTrueImage2017.iso

•    I inserted a new DVD-R.
•    I created the rescue media by double-clicking on the .iso file. Windows Disk Image Burner showed.
•    I checked Verify disc after burning
•    I clicked on Burn. Burning ... showed with a progress bar, the Finalizing ..., then Verifying.
•    The DVD ejected. ... successfully burned .... showed.

Testing

•    I connected the Seagate Backup Plus external drive.
•    I inserted the rescue DVD into the drive
•    I restarted the PC, and pressed the Del key repeatedly during POST. The BIOS showed.
•    I exited the BIOS, discarding changes. Press any key to boot from CD or DVD showed.
•    Starting Acronis Loader showed.
•    I clicked on Acronis True Image. What would you like to do? showed.
•    I clicked on Recover My Disks. Data recovery and backup management showed.
•    I clicked on Browse for backups. Browse for location showed.
•    I clicked on Seagate Backup Plus Drive (E:) > Petra backups > My partitions_full_b1_s1_v1.tib  I clicked on OK. Data recovery and backup management showed with this file under Images.

There was no button to press, so I double-clicked on the .tib file. Nothing happened.

What should I do next? I intend to copy a few files to a new folder on the SSD.

I have been trying to follow p. 127 ff of the User's Manual but the screens I am seeing (after the first one) look different from those in the manual.

Chris, see the attached document I created recently showing the process for doing a full disk restore using ATIH 2017.

There's a menu at the top of the screen with drop down options for various activities as well.  Use the drop down for recovery there instead of the side panel icon.  It will allow you to move forward - I've expereinced this behavior as well and using the top menu drop down always gets me going forward.

Many thanks to both of you. It worked!

I am not sure whether my problem was one of, or both of:

  • Using a different boot mode for the Rescue Media from the one used by Windows
  • Using the shortcut rather than the menu in bootable ATI.

C:\Windows\Panther\setupact.log shows that this PC is using BIOS, not UEFI. While the DVD drive is the first boot device in the BIOS, the way I have been able to get to boot from a CD/DVD is to press Del to get into the BIOS, then exit from it without making changes. Perhaps this tells you something!

Glad you got it going.

It sounds like everything is legacy/bios and you use your system one-time boot menu to pick your bootable menu (which is good).  If you're not sure if you're booting legacy or UEFI recovery media, check out the screenshots in this post.  Most bioses will actually have "UEFI" in the name before the bootable media in the one time boot menu or nothign in front of it if it's legacy.  On Dells and my custom PC, I can boot legacy or UEFI so it's important for me to pick the UEFI method since I have a UEFI OS install.
