Problems with File size and FLTMGR.SYS

Thread needs solution

My computer keeps restarting with the Blue Screen of Death and the following message:

Stop code: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

What failed: FLTMGR.SYS

It Will run for a little bit and then crash. I have tried most of the recommended fixes I can find for that error; none work. I suspect its a bad hard drive.

I booted off the Acronis CD and did a backup. My C Drive uses about 200GB of a 1TB drive. It usually takes less than an hour for a full backup. This time it took several hours and created a .TIB that is 700GB??

Can I restore to a new hard drive from this image, or is it going to copy garbage to the new drive?

Thanks

Dave, one of the reasons why ATI may create a much larger backup image file is when bad sectors are encountered on the source drive and ATI then switches to using the Sector by Sector method for the backup.  When SbS is used, then all Exclusions are ignored and the file size can approach the size of the actual physical drive!

You should do a CHKDSK /F for each partition on the drive to get an indication of any file system issues, and if you still see the same large backup file, then try doing CHKDSK /R to check for how many bad sectors are present and see if these are recoverable.

Note: CHKDSK will only work for partitions with an allocated drive letter, not for any hidden / system partitions without drive letters!
