Unacceptable quality. Unacceptable support. Unacceptable change in licensing with time bomb and auto-renew without notice.

Thread needs solution

I had had multiple long long drawn out resolution processes with Acronis over TrueImage 2017.   I have used the product for many years but this one is a total flop.

Consolidation absolutely does not work, and Support cannot fix it after multiple tickets. The knowledge base says you can manually delete old versions.   Support says this is unsupported.   What?

Backup to removable media fails when using multiple volumes, despite the fact that the documentation says it works.

The 2017 version sneaked in a subscription model, which is unwanted, and it has a time bomb in it that will make the product stop working, and an automatic renewal to charge your credit card again after a year.   This was not explained during purchase.

The only solution for about 6 problems I reported has been a reinstall.   The cleverbridge download link expires after about 60 days, and then you cannot do that.   Three times when I did reinstall, it wiped out all my backup definitions.  I had to manually redo them.   However, the backups did not work correctly.   All three times I reinstalled, I had to start completely over with new backups.     And, the solution of reinstalling DID NOT resolve the problems.   In one case, their service person logged in to my computer and reinstalled it. Same problem - didn't fix the issue and wipred out my backup definitions.

The bootable media creation fails if you select the options on the screen to include both Disk Director and Trueimage on the same bootup disk.  After multiple exchangeson a ticket, the support person finally told me it is unsupported because they use different linux versions on the bootable disk.  he had no interest in correcting the bootable media creation screen selections or even fixing documentation.

In one case, I was unable to recover a backup, and I had to go back to a Microsoft backup, which is not what I wanted to do.

I have used this product for many years and I know how it works.   I had great confidence in this as a backup solution, but I have asked for my money back so I can purchase something else.  Unacceptable product.   Unacceptable support.   Unacceptable change in licensing without notice.

Edward, whilst I can understand and sympathise with your grievances against Acronis for the various different issues you have listed above, as well as the same list you have posted in other topics in these forums, please understand that these are User Forums, and the majority of those responding here are users the same as yourself.  That includes all of the MVP's - we are not Acronis employees, nor paid by Acronis etc.

I would recommend submitting Feedback direct to Acronis using the tool provided in ATIH 2017, plus open a Support Case with them for any of the specific problems, if you wish to spend any more time and effort in getting these resolved.

From a personal perspective:

Consolidation aka Automatic Cleanup (Consolidation has not been done since many previous versions back).
This does work for me and for many other users.  I use this on all of my backup tasks and have done so for many years of using the product across multiple versions.

Backup to removable media - what type of removable media are you trying to backup to here?  The reference in the ATIH 2017 User Guide mentions USB drives with a requirement for FAT32 for these if storing bootable Rescue Media, or else using Optical media (DVD, CD etc).

The 2017 subscription model - Acronis have always offered two types of licenses for True Image products, this includes ATIH 2017.  The two types are for a Perpetual license (buy once use for as long as it will work) or Subscription.  The key change with ATIH 2017 is the introduction of the New Generation - Premium product which is provided as Subscription only.  I do not believe that this was 'sneaked in' and the Acronis website shows the different licensing options for these products.

If you have a subscription product then Acronis have always clearly stated how this is handled beyond the subscription period, i.e. you get a 30 day period in which to renew or to remove your data from the Acronis Servers, after which that data is deleted and the ATIH functionality is reduced to being able to be used for Recovery purposes only, i.e. no new backups can be created.

Cleverbridge download link expires after about 60 days - this should be irrelevant provided that you have registered your ATIH license / serial number to your Acronis account, after which you can download the installer and other media at any time.

Advised to reinstall - this can often resolve problems where users are seeing problems that the majority of other users do not see.  It is possible to safeguard your backup task configuration data (by saving the contents of the C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts folder which holds this data in XML data files - type .tib.tis).
There can be issues where data in the XML configuration files has become corrupted or damaged, so creating new backup tasks may be recommended to avoid this issue.

If you run the Acronis Cleanup Tool as part of reinstalling the product, then this will remove all Acronis files, folders and programs, including all your user task configuration and backup history information etc.  It sounds likely that the Acronis technician who connected to your computer used this tool.

The bootable media creation fails - there are several different methods for creating the Acronis bootable Rescue Media and different types of this media.  Acronis Disk Director is effectively an obsolete product given the lack of any recent development of the product (and the availability of very good alternative, free Partition Manager software), so including it on the Rescue media does not add very much value.

The MVP community have produced an alternative rescue media tool which uses Windows PE and which can include other installed Acronis products such as DD, Universal Restore, as well as injecting additional device drivers to support for new hardware, RAID configurations etc.
