Acronis True Image 2018 runs so fast it takes all hard drive bandwidth and stops other PC tasks !

Thread needs solution

I have a very fast processor and a reasonably new hard drive but  when true Image is running everything else stops. I can see from the resource graphs on Windows 10 task manager that the hard drive is running at 100%. As a result all other applications are blocked. I have set it to low priority but this has not helped. As my daily scheduled incremetal backup task  runs the next time my PC boots - if missed the previous day, the result is this product blocking  up  my PC at boot up every other day or so ! How do I fix this without dumping Acronis altogether. I am not impressed.

Welcome to these User Forums.

What do you have set in the Advanced Options for Performance on your computer for this backup task?

The default settings for Performance are as shown below:

The ATI 2018 User Guide has the following description for Operation priority:

Changing the priority of a backup or recovery process can make it run faster or slower (depending on whether you raise or lower the priority), but it can also adversely affect the performance of other running programs. The priority of any process running in a system, determines the amount of CPU usage and system resources allocated to that process. Decreasing the operation priority will free more resources for other CPU tasks. Increasing backup or recovery priority may speed up the process by taking resources from the other currently running processes. The effect will depend on total CPU usage and other factors.

You can set up the operation priority:

  • Low (enabled by default) - the backup or recovery process will run slower, but the performance of other programs will be increased.
  • Normal - the backup or recovery process will have the equal priority with other processes.
  • High - the backup or recovery process will run faster, but the performance of other programs will be reduced. Be aware that selecting this option may result in 100% CPU usage by Acronis True Image 2018.

As per my post,  it is a low priority task for the CPU, but as my Intel Core I5 is so fast,  Acronis still runs so fast that the backup task  takes up all the C: drive bandwidth. (a modern 2GB 5.25" hard drive)  As a result no other program can load files, dlls etc from the C: drive. I need this task to run even slower !!!!! The really annoying issue  is that if I schedule the backup to run at say 4pm  and the PC is shutdown at that time,  the task runs at the next boot.  The result is a  long wait of minutes after boot up before I can do anything else !

Open the Options page for your backup task, then expand the Advanced options on the Schedule page and you will find an option to control when missed scheduled tasks are run?

Thanks for the info above, but I still have the problem that when the backup runs the PC is strangeled by the C:drive bandwidth being hogged. How do I address this ?

I am not seeing this type of performance impact on any of my own computer, nor seeing it being reported in these forums.

Looking at Task Manager and the priority for my active ATI backup task, I see as shown below:

2018-10-29 TrueImage Performance Priority.png

As shown above, the task normally runs at 'Below normal' priority - is yours doing the same?

here are the settings seen from Task Manger;

True imageMonitor  = normal

TrueimageHomeService= below normal

TrueImageHomenotify = normal

TibMounterMonitor = normal

note I am doing an incremental backup. Does the directory timestamp search cause the blockage ?

What exactly is shown as taking either high CPU or hid Disk access when TrueImage is active?

There is a strong possibility that the real impact here is not actually TrueImage but the interaction between TrueImage and other software running on your computer, such as any Security applications.

See KB 46430: Acronis Software: Making Acronis Products Compatible with Antivirus Software - and KB 36429: Acronis Software: exclude program folders and executables from antivirus and other security programs

Here are 2 screenshots showing what is going on during a backup You can see that the C: to D: drive backup shows 100%. Both drives are reasonably new SATA 5.25" inbuilt drives

Sorry, but if I read your screen image correctly, you are backing up the C: partition to the D: partition where both partitions are on the same physical drive, but where you look to have 3 such drives installed?

Disk 0 shows above as having partitions C: and D:

It looks like I clicked on D: instead of G: when I setup the new schedule task the other week. Thanks for  the help and your patience  with my fat finger mistake.

I spoke  too soon there are  tib files for the last week on the G: drive so something else is still wrong

Please download the MVP Log Viewer tool (link below) and check if any messages are being given in the backup log for this problem task?

What security software do you have installed?  My reason for asking here is that I recently changed my own antivirus program (because of getting regular false positives when doing backups for files in the VSS snapshot store) and am currently defaulting to using the integrated Windows 10 Defender antivirus.  I have noticed that since the change I am having much higher CPU when my backup tasks are running, but this looks to be for Windows Defender more than TrueImage.

Here is the log file output for yesterday. From  a quick look it seems soething crashed because of a full drive, weird as D: and G: have enormous amounts of free space.

Please check what setting you have on the backup task Options > Notifications page for the top option about free disk space?

If this setting is enabled and a high value is set for the notification, it can give the error you are seeing in the log.

Thanks.  I will have to leave this for a few days now as I will be travelling away from my P.C. I will look again at ith this weekend if the problem still persists.

many thanks, Chris M
