ATI 2018 - Slow when browsing backup file with Windows Explorer

Thread needs solution

As the title says, after backup trying to navigate through the tib file with Windows explorer is painfully slow. The round loading icon stays on for minutes at time and sometimes the window will just close and I have to start navigating from scratch again. Is this normal? I am just starting out with ATI so unsure.

tintin, it is difficult to say whether what you are seeing is normal or not.  Where are your .tib files stored, are these on a local drive, an external drive, a network drive?

Depending on the location, this can contribute to performance issues when browsing the content, also the size of the file involved.

Normally, with local / external drive based .tib files I do not see any such delays in browsing / navigating through the file content.

Thanks

I have them stored on a USB and the file is 250GB so it is probably down to the drive and size. I am finding it a lot easier just to navigate through the restore tool within ATI itself so shall continue that way.

Thanks for your information

I've noticed this slow browsing, too, and done some very rough timings using a "Files and  folders" backup.  The .tib files are on a USB 3.0 external drive.  The backed up data consists of all the folders on a NAS - about 128 GB of data, 1,714 folders and 32,178 files.  I don't know if it matters, but there are 20 top level directories and 3 top level files.  The backup scheme is full + 6 incr.

The time for File Explorer to access data seems to depend on the number of incr files involved.  If I click on a "full" .tib file it takes about 4 or 5 seconds for the backup list (which consists of the "full" .tib file only) to be displayed.  If I click on an "incr...v7"  file it takes about 28 or 29 seconds for the backup list (consisting of the full and 6 incr .tib files) to be displayed.  During the pause the File Explorer index progress bar is displayed.  Going down (or back up) a level usually takes that same amount of time.  (Going from the backup list to the NAS share level is an exception.  It usually displays immediately. And sometimes the list of top level directory and files is also immediately displayed.,  Sometimes, but not always.)

All in all, I'd say that the behavior is not consistent but the delay is present more often than it is absent and the amount of delay depends on the number of incr files.

Also, during that time I may get two displays in new windows from File Explorer.  The first display is of my Documents folder and says something like "Locate the volume with number '4'". The next is a display showing the list of all the .tib files for the backup task and requesting "Please locate the last volume of the backup".  In the .tib file I'm processing is pre-filled in the "File name:" field.  I just close those Windows.  Once this has happened once it continues to happen when I go up or down a directory level.  If I completely exit File Explorer and start over this behavior disappears.  (Actually, until today I had not seen this behavior for several years ... several releases of ATI.)

Also, during one of my inconsistent tests a hour or so ago I got an AAP popup asking permission to access a .tib file.  I have never seen this from an ATI function before.  I assume I ran into a seldom provoked bug.  That may have altered my timings.

I am also experiencing the same slowing issues and had hoped it was resolved by 2018, apparently not :(

Hopefully I can add some new info that will resolve this problem, here is what I found:

Starting with ATI 2010, it works well, no speed issues (on Win XP or Win 7). Upgraded to ATI 2016 (because 2010 could not perform a complete system restore), I now experience slow opening of .tib files (on 5 Win 7 PCs and a new Win 10 PC).

I do different types of backups, full system, incremental system and file backups. Turns out the slow opening only occurs on .tib files where I did a file backup not system backup. The .tib files that were system backups open very fast :)

Also, I still have ATI 2010 .tib file backup types. Those files opened quickly under ATI 2010 but NOT ATI 2016.
