Backing up virtual machines

Thread needs solution

I have seen info about restoring virtual machines, but what about backing up the Host disks they are running on. Does the VM need to be suspended or shutdown before backing up the disk?

Scott, I suspect that this is another question where the answer can be "it depends".

If the VM plays nicely with the Microsoft VSS snapshot service running on the host Windows computer, then it should be possible to backup without suspending, but any activities occurring on the host not already written to disk would not be captured, the same as for the host computer itself.

If you want to ensure a good backup of the VM, then suspending it or shutting it down would achieve this without any concerns about snapshots.

The alternative would be to consider the Acronis business products which provide support for VM's and their management etc.
