Thread needs solution

I've been using ATI for about 10 years on Windows machines.  I bought a new Seagate 8TB USB drive just for backups.  I got the dreaded "Failed to open data stream" error.  I've been running ATI 2018 on a windows 10 machine for a couple of years with no issues backing up to a Seagate 4tb usb drive. Repeatedly deleted the backup and associated .tib files.  The drive came NTFS.  I also just bought a Samsung 500 gb ssd.  It's exfat.  There was no issue backing up to the ssd.  i reformatted the 8tb seagate as exfat (not the short format option) and the backup worked fine.  ntfs reformatting would probably also have worked.   i like ati and will continue to use.  i technically sell expensive database software.  there needs to be better/more informative error messages.  fyi, i did read the logs.  couldn't find anything to point to the issue.

Yeah, the error itself doesn’t really identify what the issue is.  In most cases, it’s that Acronis no longer detects the drive (USB power save) or the source/destination has changed (different volume drive letter assigned).

It should work just fine with NTFS - that’s the default for most removable USB drives.  However, in some cases, the new drives need to be initialized first and a drive volume letter assigned.  If this already had a drive letter assigned in Windows by default and it was not changed since the backup was created, it should work. 

But, sometimes, users change the default drive letter, or by inadvertently attaching multiple USB drives (an old external and a new one, plus maybe a flash drive at the same time), Windows can automatically reassign a drive letter if two of them were originally configured to use the same letter and now cannot both use the same one at the same time.

For the most part, just re-picking the source and/or destination in the backup job will get things working again... assuming it’s not something like USB selective suspend or something else like that (which doesn’t sound like the case here).
