Help with Alienware 15 R3 cloning

hello

I have recently purchased a new laptop moving from an Alienware 14 (system A) to an alienware 15 R3 (System B). i am trying to clone the old hard drive from but everytime i do, i get "bootable agent is waiting for removable devices" and it continues until i ultimately give up and hit cancel. My old hard drive is attached to a USB Caddy, i am trying to clone from the USB Caddy to the main OS in System B. my bios settings are set to raid, security boot. i dont think the system is in Raid, it doesnt appear that was in Disk manager. i also have UEFI enabled. what am i doing wrong here?

thanks in advance

Thor

Thor,

My first recommendation is to read the following link:

https://forum.acronis.com/forum/acronis-true-image-2017-forum/important…

My second recommendation is to backup the OS (C: drive) on your new computer.  In case all fails, you can restore your new laptop to its original state.

Thirdly...I believe what you want to do is do a disk mode backup of your old laptop and do a restore to your new computer using Acronis Universal Restore.

You should download the user guide for ATI 2018 and read up on Universal Restore.

Hi FtrPilot

thanks for such a quick response. been banging my head against this wall all day. one of the reasons i came back to acronis was because in my research  thought i read they had cloning tuned to a tee. i really want to clone the drive, the new computer has nothing on it i need, its also windows 10 versus my current windows 7 Ultimate. so i dont know how well a restore would go considering the different versions of windows. i have already made a back up of my old drive and it is stored on the new computer. i have made a rescue drive (USB) as well.

I am not sure what Acronis is looking for when it reboots to clone. out of desperation i have successfully clones the Old drive to a second drive in the new system, my thought being, if i can get it on one drive, then i could clone it to the next. dunno if thats the way to look at it but again, desperate you know? i will read through the link you provided. some day i hope some company just makes this a heck of alot easier.

thanks again for your reply, it is greatly appreciated!!

Thor,

Universal restore is designed to take an image that is created on one computer and restore it on another computer.

Another suggestion I have is to remove the drive from your old laptop and install it in your new laptop and see if it boots....because, if the clone works, that is what you are going to get.  If I have read your original post, would then end up with Windows 7 on your new computer.

If you want Windows 10 on your new computer, with all of your programs and data from your old computer, then a clone or a backup and universal restore won't do what you want.

What i want is my windows 7 system on the new computer. for what ever reason my old drive didnt boot, not sure if there was any Raid striping going on, never had so much trouble with a computer before, i am pretty good at switching tings over, only been doing it for about 20 years :P. and old man and his old ways i guess :P

i'll try Universal restore as well. right now i am booting over, hopefully i will boot off the rescue drive and all will proceed normally.

thanks for all your help

Thor,

Since you want Win 7 on your new computer, Universal Restore is what you want.  Universal Restore is designed to install universal drivers for the hardware in the new computer...instead of the drivers in the backup.  Then, after the new computer boots, you can then update the drivers for the hardware in the new computer.  Since you did a backup of the old computer, I believe Universal Restore is the way to go.

Also, you must perform the Universal Restore using Acronis Universal Boot Media.

Paragraph 11.11 in the User Manual is where you need to start reading.

thanks FtrPilot, ill let you know how it goes!! i sincerely appreciate you help!!
