Installing latest 2018 build 10410

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

I'm installing Acronis 2018 on two computers - have 5 licenses.  First machine no problems, installed ran, no problem.

Second machine I had installed 2018 on before (couple of weeks ago or so) but not used.  So I download the latest and install it.  It stops at around 97%  In Task Manager I noticed two subtasks - unfortunately forgot to take a screenshot :(  One was Acronis installer, but I don't remember what the other one was called.  Killed the other one and the install finished.  The installation had been pretty slow, which doesn't make much sense since it was installing to a M.2. SSD on a 30Gbps bus!

Rebooted and tried to run Acronis, but I get an error:  "The system cannot find the file specified"  No further information about what that file is.  Nothing in the event viewer.  When I run Process Monitor I see:

14:35:27.8595774 PM    TrueImageLauncher.exe    6040    CreateFile    C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\TrueImageHome\TrueImage.exe    NAME NOT FOUND    Desired Access: Read Attributes, Disposition: Open, Options: Open Reparse Point, Attributes: n/a, ShareMode: Read, Write, Delete, AllocationSize: n/a
14:35:27.8597339 PM    TrueImageLauncher.exe    6040    CreateFile    C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis\TrueImageHome\TrueImage.exe.exe    NAME NOT FOUND    Desired Access: Read Attributes, Disposition: Open, Options: Open Reparse Point, Attributes: n/a, ShareMode: Read, Write, Delete, AllocationSize: n/a

And indeed TrueImage.exe does NOT exist indicating that the install did not finish properly!

My next step is to clean Acronis Image Backup out and try to re-install the new build.  I actually had a similar problem earlier on another computer, which ironically this new one is replacing.  But I don't know why the install didn't finish - except that this one process stalled.  I left it running for about an hour and it made no progress.  It sat there at 0% CPU with nothing happening.

Hi all,

I had a hunch and removed all mapped drives from the machine.  It had 4 mapped drives on the other machine on my LAN which all are big - I have 22TB total on those two machines!  I then uninstalled Acronis, rebooted and started the installation again.  It rushed up to about the "ll" in "Installing" that appears on the install screen, then it got slower and slower and slower.  When I look at the Task manager there are now 3 subtasks:

Acronis True Image 2018 Install Shell (0% CPU)
Acronis True Image 2018 postinstall actions (0% CPU)
DB install scanner (1-4% CPU)

So I then ran Process Monitor and the db_scan.exe is running over every single folder on my drives!  That will take a while!  It's done with one 2TB drive, started on one of the two 4TB drives then there is a 0.48TB SSD...

I only need Acronis to backup ONE of the drives, 0.25TB M.2. bootup drive.  The other 11TB Acronis does not need to have anything to do with!  But for some reason it is scanning all the drives during the installation.  No indication what is going on.  No progress bar.  This could literally take hours!

There has GOT to be a better method of installing the software!!!  At least some indication about what it is doing with some sort of progress indicator!

Best regards,

Arnor

Hi all,

The DB_scanner.exe finished and now the 2 subprocesses, Installer Shell and Postinstall Actions postinstall_actions.exe sit at 0% CPU, no changes in memory.  When I check the wait Chain windows tells me that postinstall_actions.exe is waiting on svchost.exe.  I'm going to leave it for a while and if it doesn't keep going, I will stop the post install process and attempt to run it manually.

Best regards,

Arnor

Arnor, thanks for your updates on this issue.  I have never known the install process to take such a long time nor to spend time scanning your disk drives as you describe on install but most of the computers I have installed on only have a single disk drive installed and I don't use mapped drives, so perhaps it is just a case of the process being very quick for me?

ATI does normally scan for any backup .tib files on attached drives on first run after install, so I wonder if some of that process has been moved to the install function from what you describe?

If you are still seeing a problem, then I would recommend opening a Support Case with Acronis and have them investigate this with you on this specific computer system.

Hi Steve,

It took me by surprise too!  Particularly since on the other machine the process was slow, but it only took a few seconds after it had reached 95-97%  Both machines have about 11TB of space on multiple drives, but my second one has couple of drives with a LOT of small files and folders with just a few files in them...  Tough to say.

I had installed a previous 2018 build on the second machine and don't recall it taking any time at all.  But there was no doubt this install was scanning the folders of all my drives and then hung at the end, never terminating the post install process.  I'm a software developer and hey, weird stuff happens ;)

Best regards and Happy Holidays,
