Is it worth using Acronis to migrate to a new PC?

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis and keep my PC regularly backed up.

I've bought a new PC and am about to migrate onto it. Clone is clearly not an option as new hardware drivers will be required for the new PC and I'm moving from Windows 7 on the old PC to Windows 10 on the new PC.

So I was planning to use the "Files and Folders" option. But is there any advantage to using Acronis to do this rather than just zipping the contents of my C:\Users\MYACCOUNT directory and unzipping it onto the new machine?

If I did use Acronis to do this, would my username have to be the same on the new machine? Any other gotchas I should be aware of?

Any help much appreciated!

Roger, welcome to these User Forums.

There are no particular advantages to migrating your user data from the old to the new computer by using Acronis True Image versus using simple copy & paste other than being able to configure the Files & Folders task in advance and have the backup image file as a safety net for your data during the process.

If restoring user data, then you would need to ensure that you do not do so with the original permissions for your files & folders or else you will have access issues.  This is because you can never replicate the user account you had on the old computer by just creating a new user account with the same name on the new computer.

You should not attempt to backup / restore the contents of the AppData folders from your old computer - keep to copying only true user data such as documents, images, music etc.
