Making a bootable dvd-how often?

Thread needs solution

Hi folks,

Just wondering if I have to make new bootable media,  when ATI is updated to a new version that the .tb files will still be able to be opened with the older bootable media?

Thanks

Joe

Joe, a lot depends on just how old your version of ATI that you are upgrading from is?

In reality most new versions of the ATI Rescue Media will read and open most, if not all, .TIB files created by the same and earlier versions.

Officially, Acronis sets some limits in terms of backwards compatibility but this is mainly in the sense that they do not bother to perform exhaustive tests across all potential image file versions, bearing in mind that these can date back well over 10 to 15 years.
See KB 1689: Backup archive compatibility across different product versions for the official Acronis statement.

Personally, CD/DVD media takes up very little space and I have copies of rescue media going back to ATI 9.0 sitting in my collection.  Most of which I haven't needed to try using for a long time but is available should a need arise.

With the later versions of ATI, I have gone away from creating CD/DVD rescue media in favour of using USB sticks which can be updated as needed when new builds are released etc.

Note: Acronis do not make any statement about forward compatibility but from experience and reports in these forums, there is normally no issue with rescue media in that direction either unless you get into the areas of Legacy versus UEFI, or device driver support for such as NVMe / M.2 drives etc, plus of course the factor that Acronis have typically used a Linux kernel OS for the rescue media but are now moving away from this to using WinRE / WinPE with the 2018 version.

Thanks a lot Steve for the quick response. Before I bought ATI for the first time in 2010 I did use free versions Personal I think it was called that was bundled on the DVD with computer magazines, so even have a few bootable cd's from them around.

I have made a few more with 2018 ATI version just to be on safe side.

Thanks again.

Joe

Joe, in addition to creating the Rescue Media, please take some time to test that this will work for you in a situation where you are not needing to use it to actually recover your computer, i.e. that you can boot from the media successfully and can see your internal drive(s) and your backup drive with any .TIB files.
