Partition Image File Size

Thread needs solution

I recently created an image of my C drive, which contains W10 operating system.

I'm just unsure about the .tib file size. The total used space on the C drive is 79GB but the TI partition image file size is only 22GB.

Notes:

  • Image creation mode was normal (NOT sector by sector)
  • No reserve copy or TI media included
  • Performance Compression Level : Normal

Is a 22GB image file size correct? Is this due to compression? This seems like a lot of difference in data size, I just want to be sure that if I need it, the C partition image will be a full copy and bootable and function as it is now.

Thanks for any assistance.

Ant, the answer here depends on where the used space on your C: drive resides?

ATI excludes some very large files / folders by default in the Exclusions settings and these can add up to a significant saving in image file size.

I would recommend to use a tool such as TreeSize Free to check exactly what the size of the excluded files (shown on the ATI task Exclusions page) is for this system?  Note: these files are normally hidden in the File Explorer window!

Thanks for your reply Steve

Here is some screen shots showing the exclusion files, I just left the Acronis default exclusion box checked. I see now it contains items such as my Firefox browser profile.

The second screenshot shows me that  78.8GB of data is selected, then below to the right, it says data to recover: 48.6GB ( I believe this is displayed as 'initial size of data without compression'

Then the actual size of the C partition image backup file is 22GB (I assume it is compressed?)

So I guess I'm a little confused because the program is displaying three different file sizes...what I think I will do is another C partition image and uncheck the 'exclusions' check box, I have plenty of backup drive space so even if the file is larger I will feel more confident that the partition is fully backed up.

It's not the end file size or time it takes to create the image that is my concern, it is whether or not the process I am doing creates a bootable Operating System C partition that I can recover, if needed.

Thanks
