Recovery of corrupted TIB files containing important data

Hello all,

Good to be here. I'm a regular user of True Image for both my personal computer and my business (computer repair shop). One of the biggest problems I've encountered is the corruption of backup files (sometimes days or even hours from their creation), and from looking at other forum posts I see that this is a very common issue. Well, a few days ago, the backup file for a very important customer suddenly became corrupted a few days after it was created. I later realized that this was due to a configuration error on my storage server which caused part of the file to be overwritten, but more importantly, I found a solution to this problem.

I now have a tried and tested method for recovering data from a corrupted TIB backup. It involved some digging into the TIB format itself and some experimental coding, and it's honestly too technical to go into on an open forum like this. However, I'd like to announce that if anyone sorely needs data recovered from a corrupted backup, I will lend my assistance in recovering said data for a nominal fee. The only reason I request money for help with this is because at the stage in development I am in, recovering data takes a significant amount of my time.

I will hopefully be releasing a software solution for this in the near future, once I get all the bugs worked out. Currently, I have far better luck extracting data from older backups as opposed to newer ones. For example, I can reliably pull 600-800 files from a ~900 file backup from True Image 2015, while a similarly sized backup from True Image 2018 usually only yields 20-50 files.

Furthermore, I am more than willing to work with the Acronis development team on this if they are so willing, and if this post is not allowed, please let me know. I don't intend this as commercial intent, just a way to help out other users.

Thanks,

TIBGuy

TIBGuy, welcome to these User Forums.

I guess we will wait to see how Acronis regards your offer to help recover data from corrupted .tib files but this may be of interest to some users who come visit these forums.

The alternative is of course to ensure that users have multiple backups stored in different places / on different media, so that should one .tib become corrupted, there are options for recovery using other backups.  That said, in an ideal world everyone would do backups, disks wouldn't die/fail etc... but utopia has not arrived yet or is expected anytime soon!

For users reading this topic and unsure about their backup strategy, then take a read of the Acronis Article in the link below which gives a reasonable overview of why backups are essential and how to approach making backups using a 3-2-1 strategy.

Steve,

Yes, I absolutely agree. I always recommend to my customers, as well as my team, to make frequent, redundant backups for this very reason. Sometimes you don't learn to heed advice until you're in a situation like having a corrupted backup file with no alternatives ;)

Hello TIBGuy,

Thank you for joining Acronis community and sorry for the delayed response! The functionality you describe could be really a lifesaver. Would you let me know when we could arrange a call to discuss the ways of possible co-operation? Please send me a personal message with the proposed time frame.

Thank you in advance!

In the meantime, I've had some success in mounting the .tib file using Explorer.

Hello there, i'm facing the same problem with tib file. It's corrupted and i tried every possible solution out there but with no success. Is there any development with the tool, mention in this topic ? Or what advice i can get, is there someone who can pull out the data from it ?

Hello,

Sorry to bump such an old thread. I was inactive for quite some time after posting this, and received several messages from people interested in recovering data from their backups. I have messaged Ekaterina and I am waiting for a reply, but in the meantime anyone needing assistance with backup recovery is welcome to message me.

thanks!

TIBGuy Please reach out to me, I have also sent you a message. I have a few recovery files hit by a ransomware attack, I would be willing to pay for the backups!
