Rescue Media endless boot loop

Thread needs solution

Hello All,

I need to recover my SSD from an Acronis backup and I've created a DVD rescue media using the simple option. I changed the boot order on my HP Z230 to start with the DVD drive. During reboot it says on the screen "press any key to boot from DVD" which I did and then it seems to boot from DVD. However, after a while the screen goes dark and the process starts all over again. I'm using TI2018.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Detlef

Detlef, welcome to these User Forums.

I would recommend creating the Rescue Media on USB rather than on DVD as the latter can sometimes be problematic.

You should also ensure that you are booting the Rescue Media in the same mode as used by your Windows OS.

See webpage: BIOS Mode - See if Windows Boot in UEFI or Legacy Mode

See also KB 59877: Acronis True Image 2017: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media

One further point, check what SATA mode is used by your SSD as shown in the BIOS - if this is set to use RAID then you will need additional drivers to provide RAID support else your drive will not be shown.  You can use the MVP Custom ATIPE Media Builder tool to inject RAID drivers - see the MVP User Tools and Tutorials link in the forum.

My system boots in UEFI mode. As far as I can tell I have no choice when I create the the rescue media. In my BIOS boot order I've selected the UEFI table.

I created a bootable USB and that didn't boot at all.

Am I missing something?

See KB 60091: Acronis True Image 2018: how Simple bootable media creation mode works which explains how the media builder checks for files in order to determine which type of media will be created.

Can you check your rescue media to see which actual version you are using, whether it is the Linux or is Windows PE?

The Linux version would show the following files in Explorer:

You may need to disable Secure Boot if using the Linux media.

The attached screenshot shows what's on my boot DVD.

I looked at your system specs and I see that there is a setting in your bios for Boot Control.  I believe that needs to be disabled to allow booting from removable media.  You should check this to make certain that it is not enabled preventing boot.

In your boot order list in the bios you need to find the boot DVD entry with UEFI in it's name and make that entry the first in the list.  If the entry you have chosen does not have UEFI in the name then the media will not boot.
