Update to build 12510 failed

Thread needs solution

I just tried updating to to build 12510 and the process failed.  I thought I'd check here before opeing a ticket with support.

The update failed with a message stating "Access denied" but with no indication of what was being accessed.  If I understand what I'm reading in the Installation log, MSI got an error"

MSI (s) (18:28) [14:35:47:789]: Note: 1: 1708
MSI (s) (18:28) [14:35:47:789]: Note: 1: 2262 2: Error 3: -2147287038

If "1708" is the MSI error code, it's a pretty generic "Installation operation failed".
If "1603" is the MSI error code then it is no error at all; it indicates I need to reboot.

I saw nothing indicating I needed to reboot, but immediately prior to the failure I had clicked on the installation window to bring it back into focus.  It's possible I clicked at just the wrong time.

As soon as I post this message I will try a reboot.  Assuming that after the reboot I am still on build 11530, can I just try running the update again?

Patrick, were you using the full installer or the web installer, or updating via ATI app?

It is a while since I updated a system to this ATI Build. It is possible that Microsoft have issued a patch since then that could be involved in the problem.

Update: Yes it should be OK to run the update again. I would recommend using the full installation file and it will either install the updated version or offer a repair of the existing installation depending on how successful your previous installation was.

I was using the full installer.  I'll try it again.

I just reran the install and it worked this time.  And that's good because my backup fave been failing since my failed update yesterday:
Error 0x101f4: Failed to open the application component. Please reinstall Acronis True Image.

It's worth noting that a failed update can leave ATI unusable.

Yes failed software installations, particularly those tightly integrated with the OS can lead to instability. Same is true of Windows updates, particularly the major ones.

Glad that you now have a stable installation of ATI 2018.

While I'm not surprised, I was disappointed that the inst6allation process did not have some sort of automatic backout.  I'm even more disappointed I didn't think to create a Restore Point prior to the installation.  A failed installation like this - even if subsequently successful - can leave unwelcome reminders.

I too am surprised. I have not had an installation of ATI fail for a long time (then probably with beta build) but I am sure that it reversed the unsuccessful installation. May be worthwhile creating a support ticket as what you are seeing may not be what the program was supposed to do in such cases.
